There is a canoer that started in Quebec City attempting to cross Canada this summer. He is about to enter the BWCA. He is currently on the Grand Portage.

Here is his blog. If using Chrome browser it will Translate the French.

Interesting. I ran into a group a few years ago Banff to Montreal. Those crazy Canadians.

It is a bit of a confusing but in a different part of the website it talks about how his partner stopped in Blind River

Not looking good! I think Grand Portage and English rapids on the PIgeon may have done him in. Looks like he turned around. : (

I just did the Pigeon and couldn't find thge English portage around the 1/2 mile fast moving water. It was easy going down it but upstream alone would be tough going.

the english portage no longer exists/or is not maintained. that's a bummer if he turned around. perhaps he needed to do some repairs or get more info about the river. i imagine the water is moving pretty fast right now.

This is the first I've heard of this trip. Looking at his tracker map, he spent a full day and a half doing the Grand Portage. Not unexpected as he must have gear enough for 2 loads although I see he acquired a sled and was going to attempt to pull his extra stuff up the trail to avoid a second trip but pull.....through the mud.....I reckon he was one tired person when he camped at Partridge Falls.

This morning he made it half way through the fast water of the English Rapids. Water flow is at 900 cfs which is good for covering up the rock gardens but should still be very doable to walk and/or line the boat along the bank. He retreated back down the river to the Partridge Falls road access. Only reason to wait at this location is if he needs some sort of support via the road.

Dang- he just got a truck ride and avoided the Pigeon River. I just lost interest.

I read through the journal and he's gotten a lot of help. Still pretty cool that he's pressing on. Canoeing from the Atlantic to the Pacific/Arctic Ocean...over 4,300 miles...he will be in my neighborhood soon (mid gunflint trail) and I'll try to see him go by...

Yup, you are right...it's still pretty cool. I read his updates, too, today and see that his partner quit because his muscles were sore. Pretty cool that Pascal is continuing after a major shakeup like that. Problem is, looks like he's still paddling the same 18' Souris River boat. Maybe if you see him, trade him a smaller boat.

Another big trip.

This was my uncle's big trip. I'm having dinner with him Thursday, and he's meeting with a publisher on Friday to see if he can get his book published. My wife does not support my desire to replicate it!

I see he's going north on Rainy Lake through a chain of lakes to Souix Narrows on Lake of the Woods, instead of taking Rainy river. That's interesting. Didn't know about that option.

Looks like he got a good night's sleep at GNO. Hope Mocha can share some stories. Wonder if he needed help with permits for BWCA and Q?

Looks like his new plan is turning around and paddling back to his starting point. hopefully he'll keep up on his blog along the way.

Good to hear. I had a huge suspicion he wouldn't make it to his original destination solo. But glad to hear he has a great/achievable destination now. That takes mental toughness to be flexible and that determined.

Ran into a very nice Canadian going from Winnipeg to Montreal at Ottertrack lake a few years back.

Impressive attempt....Kind of a bummer he quit when he did. Seems like the "easy" part of the trip was just around the corner, as he'd made it over the dangerous big waters and now had smaller, safer lakes (for a while) with enough portages to give a chance to stretch the legs. Still, I'm glad there are people crazy enough to even try this sort of thing. :)

He has my admiration.
How many of us could even dare to attempt such a feat?
Even a journey from Quebec City to Kenora.

So has anyone figured out why it appears he didn't do that same section on the Pigeon River? I would think it would be fine going downstream on that section even if the water is lower...?

08/15/2017 06:39AM
i'd guess that since he already had to do a bunch of repairs to his canoe that he doesn't want to chance more damage? or he researched and found the river is higher than usual for this time of year and since there is no english portage, perhaps that stretch is too dangerous for him? who knows... safety first, right? he still has lake superior and all the other big lakes to cross.
