Nice article. They went about their first trip the right way. Base camp, day trips, etc. Not a boot camp. Good thinking for lasting memories.

I was surprised to see the statistic that about 25% of BW trippers are women. I would have thought it was even less.

Being one of them and canoe trips being part of my life for over 50 years - I think 25% is about right but I would like to have it be higher.
Many of my trips have been all women trips - at least until my son and grandsons started going along. Our husbands got to take a turn with the kids while we got to go on our trip.
Some of my "old lady" friends have great stories of early women canoe trips before it was officially the BWCA. Even my late friend Ruth Schelberg, former P.E. professor - Schellberg Hall Mankato State University - was taking women back in the 1950's. She had a Life Magazine crew along to document her trip wth students.
Good to see women in the outdoors.

As a former youth pastor I've taken lots of kids on BWCA trips over the past 35 years. By far the majority were females.

For the last 5-6 years I have camped at the Sawbill camp ground, usually at site 1. I see a lot of women going in.

Awesome! I can totally empathize with them not rationing the wine properly :)

I still make that mistake and have been going a long time now!

Gals using the outdoors I think is growing very fast and good. Look at kayaking or cross country skiing. I think more are going into now than guys. Also hunting the percent of women is growing very fast.
All this is good for we also will have more people wanting to protect our valuable resource and treasures.
I also believe women keep a cleaner campsite than guys, as are far as leaving no trace.
