I took a few photos of fish caught on my three-week trip to northwestern Ontario, but many of the photos were blurry. Down the road, I'll share them and possible reasons my equipment didn't work as hoped. I don't catch big fish like all y'all who catch 20-inchers until your "wrists hurt" and 22 and 23-inchers, but some of my bass are deep, looking a little like their bluegill cousins or walleyes with forehead humps. I shot every fish on tape, but as you can see, that didn't work as well as expected, as it's hard to see how long they are in many of the photos. I just didn't want to do the standard fish pic with the arms extended, as I don't have a subtractomatic in my mind that automatically deducts for perspective distortion.

You're welcome! If I'd had a partner, I would have cranked my arm back to get the fish inline with my body. In a boat, I can tell you within a quarter inch how long a bass is, but like you, with extended arms in a photo, I really don't know.
Say, Mike, I caught a 20-inch bass on my first cast with a Zulu and then five more out of the next seven casts, but then a cold front hit and they didn't want the Zulu anymore. I didn't take a photo of that fish because that was during my discouraged spell when I wasn't taking pics because every other one was blurry or worse.

Nice fish MM! I personally don't mind the arm extension photos. I would rather see the whole scene: person, fish, boat, lake, tackle used, etc.
I too am looking forward to your trip report. I am thinking about doing something similar next summer (or WCPP).

Glad to hear the Zulu was working for you for a time. I will take a 20 incher on the first cast every time :) So did you switch to the tube when the cold front hit? Or did you have another strategy?

I used leeches, Mike, but picked up a fish here and there on artificials. I caught one of the biggest bass of my life in about four feet of water with a TGO leech over the side. I was amazed it wasn't spooked by my canoe. I think it helped to have a howling wind mussing the water. That wind sure increased the fight. There were so many obstacles to avoid, like trees and rocks, so I fought it with a paddle in one hand and my rod in the other. Sadly, the photos of that fish suck. I used my SLR to get fine photos, but it had switched from automatic to manual focus and I assumed it was self-focusing. So, I have two fuzzy fish pics that don't convey how thick that fish was.

Of course, the tape doesn't tell the full tale. I googled "20-inch smallmouth bass" and found this image. It's being held by a fish biologist from a creel survey, so he has no reason to lie, but lawdy, it's a Slimfast fish.

Solo fishing is fun, but it sure is nice to have someone else around to take the pictures. I remember before the digital age I went on a solo trip and tried taking "selfies" with a 35mm by holding the camera out as far as I could. I had no way to know if any of the pictures were good until they were developed. I pick up the pictures and none of the pictures turned out, just a bunch of half faces and maybe part of fish. The person developing the pictures must of gotten a good laugh at what he or she saw.

Solo fishing is a challenge. You really need eight arms, two for the reel, two for the net, two to manage the boat, and two to take the photo! Once i netted big fish, I kept them in the net in the water while I turned the camera on and I found I really couldn't net the fish with one hand holding it, so I'd lead them into the net. That 20-incher I caught with the QM Method (TM) came off the lure just as it reached the net and with all the splashing, I wasn't sure if I had it or not for a sec. I should have taken a pic for you! Then we could make a photo board of all the fish you've caught and assisted in catching via the QM2 (also TM).

I know you don't, John!
That dang 7 inch Perch photo you showed me last time you were in Ely, looked like it was 17 lbs when held with those 6 foot arm extensions you made out of several old mannequins!
Bwahahahahahahahahaha!! :)

If you cast wind-resistant poppers on an 8wt and haul the fish in on the same arm, I guarantee you'll be able to make your wrist hurt, if that is a goal :)
I used a GoPro camera for both movies and stills, and did a pretty poor job of keeping focus on the fish. But here's an example of a wrist getting worn out:

BTW missmolly, I am from Maine too, a Mt. Desert Island product. On Basswood I kept thinking, "this place is like 100 Seal Cove Ponds all stuck together in one big beautiful lake."
If you ever go to MDI with a canoe, there's a great spot near the south end of Seal Cove Pond to launch it, right off the road to Bass Harbor :)

I live right across Blue Hill Bay in Brooklin. Go stand on Cadillac Mountain, wave a big enough flag, and I'll see ya.
