Hello all. I had a question concerning portage etiquette. If you are going to day trip to go hiking do you leave your canoe at the waters edge at the beginning of the portage that leads to the trailhead or do you portage your canoe to the trailhead? Obviously whichever place you leave it it's out of the way. Thank you!!

I just stow it well out of anyone's way, near water.

"Out of the way"? This can be a subjective term. Even if it is "out of the way", it is still "taking up space", space that someone actively portaging may need to use to get their gear "out of the way" as they complete their double or triple portage.

I would vote for your "out of the way" space to be a ways away from the ends of the portage trail. In any case, use your best judgement in sizing up the exact layout the portage you are dealing with. Each situation will be a bit different.

If you leave room for another canoe to land and unload I don't see any issues.

You will have to consider how busy the portage is - - I would take it up and away from the water's edge and tuck it into the woods.

But not so far out of the way that it looks abandoned. I would set it far off to the side and tie it to a tree.

Definitely don't leave at the edge of the water where it will be in the way - portages are busy bottlenecks where the traffic gets funneled through. It could also get blown/float away, leaving you stranded without a canoe. Take it up off the portage landing and tie it up out of the way.

Just stash it a little ways away from the portage, just far enough to be out of the way. Don't leave it on the edge of the water, a rouge wind could blow it away. Tie it up.

Put it off the trail where you think it's out of the way, step back ask yourself if several canoes came to the portage would it be in the way, if yes move it, if no tie it down your good.
