We're planning this loop, leaving on Sunday, July 16th. There is 4 of us and a dog, so we paddle a huge Wenona MN IV canoe. It's 23 feet long. We love it, but I'm a bit concerned about the Moosecamp river into Fourtown. I'm assuming there will be Beaver Dams. Has anyone been there lately? How's the water level? Also-how many Beaver Dams and are we crazy for thinking we can pull over a giant canoe like that? We've been on several BWCA trips but rivers make me nervous. The canoe is GREAT on lakes but we've had trouble with some tight corners on a few rivers (the entry in Mudro being one). Thanks!

Came out a week and a half ago - water was super high then and we pushed over two of the three as we were going down towards Fourtown, don't think you would typically be able to do if water was not that high. Was beautiful and worth the float down. Think there are three beaver dams total - even if you have to pull over them going down stream it will not be too difficult to do. Mudro seemed tighter in width than Moosecamp.

I agree with Warty. I was there the first week of May on my solo. I went Mudro, Fourtown, Boot, Fairy, Gun, Moosecamp, Fourtown, Horse, Tin Can, Sandpit, and back out. Moosecamp is now my new favorite lake and the campsite closest to the Moosecamp is my favorite campsite I've stayed at. Also, the 1hr 45 paddle down the Moosecamp River was awesome. Here are some pictures......







Edit..... I did the loop in that direction because everything I read before my trip said it's easier to take it from Moosecamp to Fourtown. It's easier to lift over going down the damns and the ones that you can paddle over/through it's easier going down stream than upstream.

Northwind Solo. I've used one on my last 3 solo trips and love it. It's a great canoe especially with a big dog. I'm an average at best paddler and it's easy to turn in twisty creeks, tracks straight in open water, and rock solid stable. I've rented one from Sawtooth, Rockwood, and Piragis so you can find one for any area of the bwca and all 3 of those outfitters are great to work with.
