I bought this Martins 10% permethrine and diluted it 1 parts permethrine and 19 parts water, 0.5% concentration and soaked a single pair of pants and my 2 long sleeve shirts, hat, hell I soaked my hammock, my 10x12 CCS, and my friends gear too. The other 3 fellas did not partake.
Lemme tell ya, the hammock area was dubbed the "the bug zapper". I was dusting dead squitos off my bright yellow tarp the whole trip. The 3 guys were making great use of the 3M Ultrathon I recommended, I barely used mine. Bugs would get my neck and head, and hands too, crafty bastards. I didn't notice any bugs interested in getting near my pants or shirts, was nice knowing where they'd attack from.
If you're looking for the big guns in bug repellent, consider spraying/soaking with permethrine. Bonus points if you buy 10%, had I bought the Sawyer premised, I'd have used 3 bottles easily. Martin's was $20 and I think it'll last years before I run out. There WAS a "smell", but it was easily put out of mind and wore off a few hours after wear. I threw my clothes in the wash for the fastest cycle I could, 20 ish minutes, without detergents.

This is the one I've picked up from Amazon - need to dilute it further than the OP did though. Permethrin

I get Hi Yield lawn & garden 10% concentrate from my local seed & feed shop. Usually go thru a quart bottle every 1 1/2 seasons. Keep your unused concentrate indoors, or at least protected from freezing, in the winter.

https://www.amazon.com/Martins-Permethrin-10-32oz-Quart/dp/B00061MSS0 that's exactly what I bought. Savage voyaguers Sawyers works just as good but it's already diluted when you buy it, at the proper 0.5% concentration. It just wouldn't have worked for my needs. I filled a plastic tub up with the mixture and just dunked everything in, including my tarp and hammock, then I let it sit for an hour before I hung them on a clothesline in my garage for a few days to dry. Worked awesome for my big bulky items. Keep your cats away!!!

That's much more concentrated than what I bought. I bought 10%. Same stuff just different math, yours will last 3.2x longer lol

I just did a pair of pants and a shirt, plus 4 pair of socks. And my camp pants. After drying in the basement for 3 days they just wouldn't finish drying due to the current high humidity so I finally tossed them in the dryer for about 15 min. Finished drying and smell almost totally gone.
I used the Martins. Has a measuring attachment (squeeze to fill the measuring cup portion). I did the gallon baggie method - put the item in the bag, add 3 oz of the diluted permethrin, seal, and let soak for an hour or more. Amazing how it wicks through the clothing - I never thought 3 oz would be enough.

Seriously disappointed in watching mosquitos bite me through my freshly permethrine treated pants while camping last week. I followed the directions for soaking and drying. Humidity has been crazy high here this summer and getting the clothes to dry after soaking took a long time and finally 15 min in dryer on low. Not sure what to think.

Keep in mind Permethrin's an insecticide, not a repellant. Bet they all flew off and died shortly after! Largely why I think the stuff's real value is more in dealing with ticks than it is mosquitoes.

I thought about that. But I wanted to see them keel over right there!

Can anyone recommend a non petroleum based version or Permethrine?

Have used both Saywers Permethrin Clothing Spray, and currently Duration Permethrin 10 Clothing Soak . Both contain some petroleum distillate (mineral oil), are water soluble, designed specifically for treating outer wear, do not smell when dried (to my nose).

I get mine from the local farm supply store and dilute it in a one gallon sprayer. I lay my stuff out on the deck, pump up the sprayer and go to it. I let it dry, flip and repeat. Leftover spray goes around the foundation of the house. Simple and effective. Such awesome stuff that eventually we will discover some horrible side effect.

I think the Sawyers is non-petrol. "
I was looking for a less expensive concentrate that I could dilute to .5%.
