On Monday, my daughter Allie (19 years old) is heading into EP 64 with her boyfriend. She has been on at least a dozen trips with me, and this is the first one without me! She is an outstanding young woman, and it feels good that one of my girls wants to branch out on her own on paddling trips. So, if you see a young couple in an old SR Quetico 17 LeTigre with the flying moose on the front in the Pine/Canoe/Caribou area next week, wish her well!!

To be 19 and in the BWCA again but that is 40 plus years ago.

She didn't invite her dad? Hmmm, my daughter turned 29 and she is into hiking. I believe they hiked to a summit on mount Rainier for the sunrise this morning. But she'd do anything to come back and paddle with her dad. Haha.

That's great, Frenchy19, and definitely less scary than the first time you send them out alone with the car, eh!

If they're headed to Alder be sure they go through the south arm - that north portage is a brutish little thing.

Yup, you wilderness canoe dads are pretty special. You did a great job getting them interested in the outdoors!

I bought her a pair of Keen Voyager boots as a gift for the trip. I also flipped the old SR up on a couple of saw horses and pulled out all the gear she would need. When she saw that, she accused me of being a micro manager! I said, no, I am helping you...but there may be a bit of truth to her accusation. I am not sure who is more excited for this trip; Allie or me?

is this a "test" to see if the boyfriend is husband material? :)

Naw; he is a good guy, and he and Allie get along and treat each other well. That said, she does know how to take care of herself if need be ;-)

When she was in college, my daughter "tested" a couple boyfriends by taking them on a canoe trips. Several failed, but the one she married started a novice and has transformed into a great canoe trip partner - 4 kids and 22 years later - they are still paddling together.

Congrats! Seems like she has a good teacher! It's awesome that younger folks want to do what the 'old man' does too.

And they are off! Spending tonight at the Clearwater Lodge and put in tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing from them upon their return!!

Did you put a tracker on them? maybe a SPOT or Delorme? It is fun to watch the kids as they travel.

The whole point of this is to be free of Dad, not still attached. It would not be fun if it were me.

Agree, but momma says otherwise. She is the one who bought me an InReach a couple years ago. I send a preset "Reached Camp" message. So will Allie. I also told Deb, my wife, that I may forget and not to stress out. She is good about that with me; we'll see what happens if Allie forgets/device malfunctions.

I am very confident in Allie's abilities, and I cannot wait until she returns to tell me about her trip!

Alright, last uptight daddy post. She made it to Clearwater, and they issued her permit and collected her funds for the bunkhouse with no issues. I must admit, I was worried that she may have received some guff about reserving a bunkhouse as she is only 19. Apparently, my concerns were unwarranted-and that is good! She is incredibly responsible and a delight to my soul...

Sounds like a great woman, you should be proud. And I'm guessing her first trip will be better than yours.

Success! She and Mark had a good trip. Very little rain, and she finally got to see Johnson's Falls. Here she is atop the ridge on the southern shore of Clearwater. Very proud papa!

Good to hear. It's always good to know your daughter(s) have become capable, independent people.

Glad to hear they had a good trip. Seeing Johnson Falls is a worthwhile trip on it's own. She's a very capable young woman, and I understand you being proud. I'm guessing that Allie will have many trips in the years ahead.

I have to show that photo to Jody, she'll get a kick out of it.

Very cool. I look forward to the day that each of the ducklings go on their own trip............ as long as they still do a trip with dad ;)

That is the most important part! Next year, we are looking at Woodland Caribou; would be a first for both of us.

I'm happy she had a great trip Frenchy, and glad you survived the worry, ... or jealousy (LOL, I know you wanted to go along) .... and that she made it back safe.

I think she likely had great inspiration and a great teacher! Be proud!
