I have a Lowrance Hook 4 depth finder and would like to get the lake contours for Canadian lakes. I have the chip that covers most of the lakes in the lower 48. It is really nice to see the bottom contours and find reefs and sunken islands to fish. Lowrance lists the one that works as Navionics+, North America the one that covers all of the USA and Canada. Has anyone used this one and could you comment on how you like it? It would be nice to know if it's any good before I buy it. Thanks for your advice.

With the Navionics plus you choose which areas you want to download on an on line map and download until card is out of storage. You can erase and download whatever you want for 1 year unless you pay again. They hold a lot. I have all of Minnesota, most of Missouri, most of Oklahoma, and all of Kansas(my home state). You or anyone else can map unmapped or previously mapped areas by sending in your recordings which means constantly updated data. They are extremely accurate in the areas I fish with 1 foot contours. I love it but do not know about coverage, etc. in Canada.

I thought that this was just a chip I installed and I could see all of the USA and Canada. So are you saying I would have to download the area I wanted to see. Then if I go to another area, erase and download another area?

That is correct, but like I said, the areas you can download are pretty vast. You might be able to get everything you will ever want on the card. I've had all the major mapping cards and this one is by far the most accurate and detailed, although none are perfect. It covers many lakes that other cards did not. You should definitely research it before buying as it is much different than preloaded cards in that it takes a little time and practice to use it. You basically plug it in to computer and register. Than a map of US and Canada comes up with all of the covered lakes and contours, etc. You then outline the exact areas you want and it downloads those areas giving you the amount of data used as well as how much is left. It can take some time but you only download areas or lakes you want. I'm not sure, but I think they hold as much as any card out there, but you get to choose what is on it as well as being able to get updates or map areas on your own. Really pretty neat but also very hands on compared to preloaded. After one year you would have to pay for another year if you wanted to make changes. I think it is the best thing going. Before you buy, you or anyone can also go to the Navionics sight and see the exact maps with all the details just as they will appear on your fish finder for any area including being able to zoom in and out and move around the lakes to see what each map or area shows. This is a neat feature and is handy whether you buy a chip or not. There is an icon in the lower left corner of the map that you push to get the map with the latest edits and most detail (It's called "Sonar Charts" ). To go directly to the map just type in Navionics Web Map. You can then zoom in or out or move around North America and explore. If you have Sonar Charts turned on you will have to zoom in more to see contours. It is extremely detailed. You should at least check out the maps, It's what sold me and is tons of fun to play with and is free.
