We were over at the Grand Ely Lodge and, while it is a nice place, my wife commented, "why would anyone stay in a hotel in Ely?" So yes, there are hotels and a few motels downtown and bunkhouses at some of the outfitters for the night before or after a trip. But our preference is a cabin on one of the nearby lakes. Because we own one of those cabins, I will refrain from suggesting which of the many cabin places to try. Besides, I think we will be using ours in mid-Sept. Its a great time to be up there.

It has been a few years since my wife and I went in through Ely. When we are in Ely we stayed at The Paddle Inn. Nothing fancy but they were friendly and reasonably priced plus they had good parking for trailers and were dog friendly.

Night before put in and night of take-out, we always stay at the Lakeland Motel. Six cabin-type units next to the Dairy Queen, and right across the street from a drive-up coffee place that opens at 6:00 AM. Though it's on the main drag and the area can get busy (the DQ is very popular), it's a nice, simple place that doesn't cost too much.

I did indeed rock down to Electric Avenue, but I did not take it higher. I regret that.

Not sure if you are looking for "hotels" with the amenities typical of a hotel or just lodging. I nearly always stay at CCOs "motel" which is easy walking to all of Sheridan and most Ely stores. Besides the simple rooms, they also have several apartments for rent on a daily basis.
Also, consider checking out Air B and B - surprising number of listings.

quote overthehill: "Have stayed at lakeland, adventure inn, super 8, paddle on inn, all OK. As far as motels. Grand Ely Lodge is top notch."
Agree, but it is also twice the price, minimum of the other places you mentioned. My wife and I will be there for one night in August post Quetico trip at $250.

We stayed in Budget Host in Ely. It wasn't "bunkhouse inexpensive" but it was inexpensive. We stayed in Room 7 and I was very pleased. The bed was good, the room was clean, I loved the automatic soap and lotion dispensers in the bathroom and the auto shampoo and body soap dispenser in the shower. They provided TV and a refrigerator. We walked to town which was a big plus for me.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
