I don't believe for a second that that was a Muskie.
Simply look at the bite and it looks like the animal or fish had to have two distinct Carnivorous teeth. That would be an Otter or something of that nature. A Muskie would leave more of a raking type of injury, that thing had two very distinct tracts that it ripped.
There is a big "anti" Muskie movement in some areas of Minnesota by some lake associations and I can't help but think that the same thing we are seeing in the political world with fake news is entering into this narrative. I would love to see what a wildlife biologist would have to say.

Not so sure it wasn't a Muskie.......with all due respect etc. etc. I to oppose all forms of political correctness which obscure clarity and truth. While there may be an anti Muskie movement amongst a certain populace it shouldn't be a reason to deny what very may well be truth.
Those long gashes look very reminiscent of what pike do to large suckers.......long deep gashes, side by side.
And wasn't the fish sighted? I could be wrong but it seems the other possible culprit, a big snapper, would probably have one one big nasty bite and not 2 spaced evenly apart.

Did you guys read the article or just guessing? 25 lacerations and the doctors think it was a fish. My money is on mr big bad Muskie. But I don't suppose it matters much......I hope the little young lady suffers no physical or emotional setbacks as a result

I lived on that lake for many years and still fish it regularly. I am not going to pretend that I know what critter caused the bite because none of us know for sure. What I can say with 100% certainty is that there are a lot of big muskies in that lake. I see at least one sunning themselves in the shallows almost everytime I am on the lake from about late June to early Aug. I've never once seen an otter on that lake (granted I know there are some in there).

MT,
Yes I did read the article and several others on the subject as well as looked at other Muskie bite articles and NONE look like that. I respect the Doctor's opinion, but honestly what does he know about a fish bite, otter bite or any other non common bite unless he is trained in animal biology or is an avid outdoorsman.
To me there are two very specific canine slashes, and I've fished with suckers for 40 years and never seen a pike, musky, or walleye leave two tracks like that behind. I've had many a shredded sucker in my day.

there were more cuts(toe area and back above the ankle), canine teeth do more ripping and tearing then the clean slices like we see here. i know , once had a dog bite my finger and it was far from a clean cut.
keep your line wet, good things will happen

I don't know what bit her. Historically speaking the most likely culprit is an otter as this has happened before on the lake as well as other parts of Minnesota. The girls mother initially said it was an otter as well, then the doctor told them it was a fish? Doesn't really matter as I doubt there will be a irradication of Muskie or otters on the lake :) but still curious.

You present your case well and may have persuaded me to consider other possibilities.

A few years ago in Wisconsin...
Muskey Attack
A few years ago my son was soaking his bruised toe in the water on Fire Lake when this 'rock' moved. They kept it entertained with left over hamburger...
gotta be careful what you dangle in the water....not going to let my grandkids see this story...

An otter with an open, slashing mouth would have the power to cut that deeply with it's twin incisors. A musky would rake the skin more than slash it, producing something akin to a bicyclist's road rash upon scraping pavement.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.
