We are going to do a day trip on the Crow River, does anyone know where we could get more info on paddling the river in the area just outside the Twin Cities? Is there a forum like this one that pertains to other paddling areas? Any help would be appreciated!

Did you find what you were looking for? If you need more info, let me know as I have done over 1/2 the entire length and some of it multiple times.

John thanks! We are going to put in at Crow-Hassan park and end in Dayton. Seems to be a doable day trip. We are open to suggestions. Another trip I would like to do is an overnight though stay in a town along the river? Any suggestions for stay over places? Thanks

My buddy and I canoed the Crow River a few years ago in the Spring. We finished in Dayton at the parking lot just after the bridge. We started from the Crow-Hassan park as you will.

The water was really too high and fast but we managed. It would be best if you start in the early morning as it took us a long time to get to Dayton. This was with very swift water. So you should plan for a whole day.

I wish I had more detailed information but my buddy set it all up.

We paddled the Crow river today from Hanover to Dayton, great trip, gorgeous weather. The trip took us 4 hours so we were able to get a post paddling cocktail at the River inn in Hanover. We want to see the rest of the river!

Nice walleyes. There are lots of them in the deeper holes where the river bends. Hopefully you got enough for a meal after your post paddle cocktail.

Crow-Hassan park to Dayton is probably the best choice. It is the least muddy, and best kept. I have not been on that section of the river recently.

As you get further up river, it gets so muddy that you may sink up to your knees if you need to get out.... and you will need to get out. Living in Wright County, we are on this river often. Last time was 2 weeks ago. We put in at Johnson Park on 7, and planned to end at Crow Springs Park on 25. After 5 hours we made it to Humphrey-Arends on 9, which is half of our plan. We decided not go any further, and called for a ride to the truck. Lots of jams blocking the river. This river is not maintained well, and is a risky choice for the inexperienced. There are pieces of fence posts and barbed wire from "removed fences". Finding a random fence post just under the surface is not common, but it my happen on occasion. Many jams and tricky snags currently. Be careful anywhere on this river. It's great when you can paddle, but portaging around obstacles will get dirty, frustrating, and slow. The step banks you see are whats under the water when you get out. The DNR river info does mention these things, but in my opinion, they understate the risk.

Thanks for the info, we will be on the river again. We did go from Hanover to Dayton and had a nice paddle but it was shallow in spots though we were able to get through with out getting out of the canoe. It was beautiful and I want to explore the river more.

Another river we will get on next spring is the Blue Earth. Looks beautiful for a day paddle!

Glad to know you enjoyed it, and thanks for posting your experience. If you didn't have to get out, that section is in good condition.

Anyone choosing to paddle sections before Rockford, can expect to have to get out, in deeper water, with muddy, steep dropoffs, in order to get around jams.

I reported to the DNR, the conditions we encountered, but I don't know if they, the county or anyone clears the snags and jams. It seems to get worse every year.

Don't mean to discourage paddlers, just be careful on this river, especially when the water get's high next spring.

Safe and happy paddling everyone.
