When I did this route I carried my 90# Sawyer 222 up that portage. My partner and I were so exhausted we made camp at the first site. Later that evening I was reading the pamphlet from the park that suggested it was a ten day trip back to the put in; we had two more nights and three days to make the loop.
Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody’s going to die.

The Steel is a great trip. I thought the uphill was the easy part, the ball busting rocks later in the portage are what will really get you. The log jams on the river are both fascinating, and a real challenge at times. There is nothing like following a good portage only to have it end in the middle of a giant log jam that has moved downstream.
