Two years in a row now I have made the wrong turn at the end of the bridge at Duluth. Maybe it's just me but both years I have ended up going east along the lake when I meant to go straight up the hill and have somehow missed the turn. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Stay in the lane that says 53 North, believe you just stay in the left lane when you go over the bridge.

what's up the hill that's more attractive than lake superior? LOL.
if you're heading to Ely you could also take hwy 33 out of cloquet, skip duluth all together!

Highway 61 along the lake was beautiful the turn on number 1 towards Isabella was okay. But 63 and to Ely was a pain in my butt. Yeah I think I forgot to stay left. Thanks for the help.

Even if you miss the turn and are heading north there are several ways to get back up to the top of the hill and back on 53. If you have a map or a GPS it will be easy. Duluth isn't that big so you are never more than 10 or 15 minutes out of the way. If you go way too far you can head across Arrowhead road. If you find yourself at the end of I-35 take 21st street up the hill, take a right onto Woodland Ave, and a left onto Arrowhead Road. It will meet up with 53 by the airport.

When going to Ely, I like taking Hwy 61 to Two Harbors, then N on Rt. 2 to Rt. 1. It's a nice drive up through there and Rt. 2 is a fine road with little traffic.

It a little counter-intuitive as IIRC the signs for 53 north also say 35 south. That gets me.

As far getting to Ely - what Boonie said. G-maps says its faster as well. Also prettier and almost no traffic past Two Harbors. If you have the extra 45 minutes or so do the north shore to route 1, but from bridge 35-61-2-1 is the fastest route to Ely in my experience.

I agree that the north shore route is a much nicer drive. Stop at Gooseberry Falls if you haven't.

That whole layout on the other side of the bridge is a big cluster ........ plus they have stop lights at places right in the middle of it. What were they thinking when they designed that configuration? Yep, just keep your eyes on the signs for the 53 on the left.

I think it's actually faster and more purdy

I think so.

My biggest problem with Rt. 2 is just not going way too fast while I'm looking at everything but the road!

53, 35 and 535 all there to try and confuse you.
As previously stated, just stay left...

The good news is you're aware of the wrong turn you've taken twice so pay extra attention next trip and you'll get through it fine. We are all students of our experiences.

I actually find that I am more likely to make one of those mistakes again once I do it once while learning because I overthink it and I have memories of doing it both ways. Try being slightly dyslexic and confusing left and right all the time.

If your going to go up 53 to Virginia and up 169 route, then you'd be best to go 35 south to state Highway 2 up through Proctor and up to 53 from midway rd. Then your staying away from a lot of stop lights by the mall in Hermantown. When it says 35 south your going more west to where hwy 2 goes to Proctor.

The hwy 2 out of Two Harbors is a County rd 2 and like said is a far less traveled and pretty route. Going to hwy 1 by Finland is much longer and windier. Hwy 53 might keep you in cell service and have more services. But in Virginia there is a bridge and road project going on. So 2 out of Two Harbors is a good way to beat that.
