Any advice is welcome.

First trip ever to south arm of knife this august form the 19th to the 26th and I am looking for any fishing advice. Our group is made up of pretty avid fisherman.

Best way to catch some consistent walleye this time of year? Is this still a good time to catch walleye on the lake?

Any other species to target? Trout? Pike? Any panfish?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Knife lake was a paddle through lake for me during August many years ago. It seemed that every rock pile near shore had a pod of smallies hanging on it and I quickly took advantage with a top water lure. No dandies but I could catch 2 or three in the 15" class before the rest wised up.

South arm? That's the American side? If so then live bait, small hooks and light line is the ticket. I was astonished at the clarity of the water. 6lb max on the line and a lindy rig with super crawlers or leeches would get the walleye. I probably would start at 20ft, catch them at 30 and not be afraid to go 40 after mid morning for bigger walleye.

Tough call on pike........I find bigger walleye in August still in at least 20ft but bigger pike tend to come up to 15 ft in the evening to feed. Good time to be trolling or tossing a Super Shad Rap (I like the perch). So I am conflicted.....stay deeper for bigger walleye in the evening or go shallow for pike that last hour.

Rapala Tail Dancers trolled fast might find you some walleye as well if trolled in 25ft near bottom. Deep diving banana style cranks are the way to go. If you want to outfish your pals get a Mega Bass Deep Six. Be sure to get a deposit if anyone wants to borrow it ;-)

Any lakers around? Probably, slow it down, put a rainbow trout colored tail dancer WAY back mid afternoon and ease around. Keep trying ar various times of the day for the lakers.......they will eat sooner or later. To many folk troll for a few hours and then lose confidence and quit. They may not eat for a day or two and then the light switch goes on.....keep trying.

although i've done about 15 trips into SAK , never done one in midsummer ,my info maybe a bit generic .
so in august a depth/fish finder is definitely a plus + , to find deeper lake humps , wallys, smallys should be on mid lake humps ? low light conditions are always prime time , lighted bobbers off camp after sundown (if you can stand the bugs)
when its dark even mid summer walleyes can be caught somewhat shallow in the right conditions.
pike , a person should be able to pop a #5-#8 with diving crankbaits
lake trout , many members know more than i and a page from Plittle , use in line keel weights , big spoons - non diving minnow imitations and bigger deep diving crankbaits with no keel weight , and with knife lake being a long deep somewhat narrow lake just run right down the gut , the lakers will follow the ciscoes schools and knife lake has some huge schools of ciscoes , try and get down to that 30' mark ,,, i would think .

I was there two years ago in late August and I was the only one to catch fish. Trolling two different lures with an orange stripe on the bottom. One was a blue topped walleye runner and the other was black on the top with white/clear on the middle and bottom. I'll try and remember to post a picture of those lures. I caught 5 good sized pike. But try and have a few deep diving lures with an orange stripe on the bottom.

Can't speak to late summer but when we were there in early June the shallows were full of eater walleyes. Every night we'd roll out and catch 8-10+ 16-18 inchers right at dusk. There is tons of structure in that lake (islands, narrows, humps etc.) but we didn't have to look very far to find them as they were posted up everywhere including cruising the shallows along shore. Didn't have much luck trolling but they were going nuts for leeches under a bobber.

Didn't have any luck on Lakers but they're definitely in there. As others have said bring some big cranks. I'd aim to get 15-30 feet down so you're going to want a looooot of line on those reels.

Smallies were all over near the Eddy portage. Either walk down to the mouth of the rapids and fish out or float out and cast into the moving water and you'll have no trouble finding them.

Here are the three lures that were working for me in August on SAK. The one in the middle caught the most fish.

Pinetree is a cool cat but don't listen to him. The lakers will eat but you have to stay with it. Keep trying.........middle of the day when other fishing is off is a good time to try. Keep going out, sooner or later they will eat. Go out, troll for a few hours, rinse and repeat.

My son's July 2017 Lake Trout. Trolling over 90 feet of water with a 18ft diving crank at 6:15 AM. The fish are there, they want to eat, you just have to put whatever lure/bait you are using in their strike zones.
