As posted here in the past. There are a few everywhere.

August 8,2017
CO Mary Manning (Grand Marais East. CO Manning also investigated a litter complaint on the Superior Hiking Trail; a large group of young men from the Twin Cities area left trash strewn around a campsite including their half full trash bag and defecated at two tent pads; hopefully information left behind will lead the officer to this group.

It takes an incredible amount of stupidity to do the things that some people do. Morons in every sense of the word.

Though I agree with your comments about stupidity, I often equate stupidity to ignorance, or not knowing what one is doing. Stuff like this appears intentional...crapping on two tent pads wasn't an accident.

You are correct. This guys just didn't care one bit and did it intentionally.

I know of a site in Quetico in North bay they crapped all over the pad area and stuck toilet paper in spotss where you were going to put your tent.

Clearly there had to be motivation here... Travel that far to do this? Drunken bad choices don't lead to pooping in places where people sleep unless there is some specific anger.

Any idea on motives?

Like I mentioned and like others have had similar stories some peoples only motive is within their group they think they are funny or actually like to cause other people discomfort in many ways.
Their are some twisted mines out there and a normal person can't figure out there brain waves.

My 8th grade math teacher's name was Mary Manning. Obviously not the same person since she would be about 100 and there was no mention of people being torn limb from limb and stripped of their skin and fingernails. Ms. Manning was old school.

Hopefully they're stupid enough to put it on You Tube. The motivation? I think it's, "hey, look at me, I'm crazy. Record it, man!" Hopefully, when they get older, they realize their mistakes and how precious these types of areas are.

This sort of story is so upsetting and the solutions so complicated. Ignorance and anger are core and interactive.

Evidence based reasoning and common sense both tell us punishment tends to build resentment and sneakiness, the idea it is only wrong if you get caught. More recently we have added it is only wrong if when caught something bad will happen.
Anger is power. We all have a core need for power just like we have a core need for belonging. We can express that power through rage either directly or in passive aggressive ways or in cou rage. The serenity prayer helps with that, the courage to do what I can.

Empathy, the ability to be aware and care about other people does not fully develop in the human brain until the late 20's and many cases early 30's. Cultural norms that dictated obedience to respect are mostly gone today and the brain power to be self disciplined and do the right thing because it is the right thing even when it is not easy to do the right thing is tied to empathy. The opposite of ignorance, knowing, is acquired with experience and empathy.

Natural consequences do teach. I would hope when these culprits are caught they are required to do some clean up work consistent with the disregard for others they committed until it is clear they have learned to think downstream before they act this way again. They will no longer be ignorant. But subjecting them to something meaningful is not politically correct these days. And holding their parents, community and culture accountable would be so wrong, too. It's complicated.

Having reflected a lot on this I realized I was obedient to my parents and community rules more out of fear of losing their love (respect) than any punishment.

Well it sounds like they know where they are from and it was a large group so hopeful someone can find them or at least the camping permit holder.

When I first started going to Quetico in the late 90's I would run across this nearly almost every trip. Sometimes when a group of young men get together the idiot factor goes up exponentially. They say the frontal lobe in men doesn't develop fully until after age 25 :)

Hopefully this will help CO Manning find her boys. It's not too uncommon to find something like a sales receipt to help identify who dumped trash. Opefylly a little shame and humiliation of being caught will straighten most of them out.

I think having your picture posted with your crime and punishment at the EP's would go a long ways towards deterring more disrespectful behavior and provide a lasting lesson. It would show that people do get caught, what common infractions are, and what the penalty is. Less serious offences, like a single prohibited item by mistake, could go without the photo but still be listed. Personally, I have no idea how much the fine is for any offences in the BWCA. Just knowing that would probably make people more conscientious about the rules and less likely to break them for shits and giggles.

How do they know it "was a large group of young men from the Twin Cities" why do they have to go threw the trash to find out who they are? If they know group size and where they were from - sounds like they know who the group was by checking permits.

You don't need permits to hike on the Superior Hiking Trail

I actually poop wherever I wish on Crown Land and I sure hope the bears don't think of me as a low life paddler when they encounter my poop.

Putting the pics of the offenders on Facebook would be a big deal but probably unconstitutional.

For interesting reading in the same vein, I read the "Cuffs and Collars" section of my MN Outdoor News. These are weekly true tales from the life and times of MN's hardworking CO's. Some of the antics are truly unbelievable, some discouraging, but I always appreciate the CO's after reading this.

I think they should be assigned to digging latrines in the back country.

Thank you for this thought, it's easy to loose this focus and just get mad.
