Anyone heading out this weekend to catch the Perseid meteor shower? Wish I was going to be somewhere that it wasn't still 89 degrees at 2:00am. Ideally on a north-facing campground in BWCA.

Planning on laying at the top of Brockway Mountain on the Keweenaw. It's supposed to be clear here and there is minimal light pollution.

Heading to Tofte on Superior. My biggest problem is staying up late enough to see them.
Supposed to be a once on a lifetime happening.

I'm not usually cynical but I swear that's been the hype the last several years. I'm a perseids fan, try to plan my trips around them.....

Unfortunately, there is a waning gibbous moon that will provide a fair bit of light once it rises around 10:30PM. With twilight ending around 9, its not a long window of fairly dark skies.

Just wait till next year, August 11 will be a new moon! That might actually control my summer plans!

Its always worth a try. Our best meteor shower was the Leonids one year. There were so many simultaneous trails that we could really see the radiant like someone was drawing a diagram. Our first trip to the BW included Perseids traversing the aurora! That was cool. Lots of nights are disappointing, but the good ones are worth it.

The hubby and I are going to be somewhere betwixt Tofte and Isabella for the next four nights camping and berry picking. We bought an air mattress that fits in the back of the truck, and, weather permitting, plan to sleep there instead of the tent so we can watch the sky without the obstruction of a tent. We'll be portaging out the next week. I wish I had timed that to coincide with the Perseids!

Last night I was just a couple miles up the Sawbill at the overlook just past Britton Peak. We sat there about half an hour and saw lot! We got there before the moon rise.

We watched Saturday night between 10 and 1am EST. It was a good night to be out as the weather was near perfect here. A little humidity in the sky probably drowned out a few, but we saw a lot of them. We didn't see anything crazy big but the quantity made up for it.

When the moon came up and visible around 12:30am EST Sunday morning it was a brilliant reddish orange. Also very cool to see. The only thing that would have topped it off would be some northern lights.

We also sat out at our house Friday and Sunday night and saw a few but there is a bit more light pollution there vs. Brockway.

Hex.
