Looking for permit reccomendations for our trip next month. Group of 4 experienced campers. Intention is to basecamp and fish exclusively.

Thanks!

How far do you want to travel? What do you want to catch? Do you want daytrip options?

For an easy trip to a basecamp where eater size walleye are plentiful but you do not have an option for daytripping to other lakes look at a trip to Crocodile Lake. You use a 66 permit but start from East Bearskin Lake. 30 minute paddle to the portage to Crocodile Lake and then a 120 rod portage. 2nd campsite is the nicest one IMO. My then 11 yo daughter and I made it to the campsite in an hour and a half from the landing.

Eater walleye were easy to find, decent solitude (we had the lake to ourselves at the beginning of August last year), but you can't daytrip to other lakes from Crocodile.

Thanks for the reply. We're not opposed to putting in a big hard day to get out on Day 1, especially for solitude and quality fishing.

My ideal situation is to land a few eater walleyes every night and the rest of the fish made up of smallies and Northern. Historically we have enough fun with the bigger Northerns but not enough with wallys.

Insula is scenic, has good fishing, and is accessible in a longish day. I don't think it has bass, though. It's big enough to keep you busy for three days, but also has day trip possibilities.

You can head up by Basswood river via Fall Lake.

You could snag a tow up Moose and head into Knife. With the tow and no adverse winds, you could get far enough away from the west end to find some solitude and great fishing, with some good day trip options to boot.

Meeds lake would get my vote. Good walleye and bass fishing and hardly any traffic. Not sure about northern because we didn't really target them. We camped on the east end island and loved it.

Paddle the leisurely creek (Hog Creek) into Perent. Plenty of nice campsites, lots of eater walleyes, and some big northerns to go after.

You could also take a moose lake tow to splash/ensign and NE to Vera to fit your criteria.
