I finally finished my first paddle today, which is a good thing because we leave tomorrow. I used the bird's mouth method. The main flaws in my execution were two: I left some gaps in the shaft--where the strips of cedar join--and spent a lot of time trying to fill them with epoxy. Second, I put fiberglass on the blade (it's a bent shaft type) but had trouble getting it to lie smooth. The paddle looks great from about 30 feet. Not so good close up. Weighs 20 oz. and has an epoxy rock tip. I have three more in various stages of construction that I hope to finish after our trip.

Keep at it because that is how you learn. I bet each paddle comes out better than the previous one.

I feel like most of my projects are like that. At close inspection you can find flaws. Then you use them and stop noticing. And I'm sure the next ones will be even better.

So, how does it paddle?

The first one is never perfect. The second one...usually 100 times better. The third one...perfect.

It takes practice to get good results with any new endeavor. If it were easy, everyone would be making them.
