We paddled the Horse River from Lower Basswood Falls up to Horse Lake August 12. Water levels were fine. In general water levels have dropped in this area since then, but not enough to make it hard to paddle the Horse, I'm guessing.

What part of the Range River are you interested in?

Hey Ho Ho!

I've never been on the Range River -- I'm hoping on my way out from Jackfish that it'll be navigable from Jackfish Bay back to Sandpit -- any inside info or advice with this area? Thanks!

The Range from Jackfish to Sandpit is a dependable route in all but the very lowest water levels or the very highest. Straightforward- one portage around a pretty rapids, the portage into Sandpit easier to locate coming from Jackfish than going to Jackfish but really not an issue.

I second what Banksiana said. Nice route too.

Came down the Horse River three days ago from Lower Basswood Falls to Horse Lake. We had to get out and wade through each of the rapids. But we we were wearing our trusty Keen Water Shoes and shorts so no problem.

Did you wade through the portages or were these in addition to the three portages? Also...do you like your KEEN shoes? I've never had any, but checked some out online and they look nice! Thanks for any info!

Thank you!! Sounds like a nice reach to paddle on our way out of the BWCA!

The wading through the rapids was in addition to the portages. I always take the portages no matter where we are. I love my Keen's H20's! It's all I wear when in the BW. Comfortable, light, good tread, toe guard, dry fast. Worth the money.

Thanks for the info -- I'm hoping for some rain the week before we head up there! My dad and I just planned out our trip today---we are going to make sure to single trip our portages....and we'll anticipate having to maneuver the Horse River like we did the last time. The only time I've been on this river was a day trip and an empty canoe. Things could be different with a loaded boat!

I paddled the Range River from Jackfish Bay to Sandpit last night. No troubles whatsoever. Met a solo canoeist on this little reach of river (the only canoeist we saw all day). There was a short 15 rod portage around the set of rapids, which were quite scenic, and then the portage from the river to Sandpit was very short AND WET!! Was neat to see some old logs from the logging days on the Sandpit end of the portage. I'm glad we took this route back to Mudro!
