Looking to get the wife out camping for the first time since our first was born. We generally made a couple trips to the BW every year but this fall I'd like to keep it easy for the sake of time and effort (already got my trip in this year anyway :))

We've done a lot of fall camping in the past, probably my favorite time to go. I always took the big boat on those trips though, chasing the fall walleyes. I'd like to simplify this time and just take the canoe. Keeping my focus on SNF campgrounds on good walleye lakes. I'd also like to do some grouse hunting as well. Aiming for early October.

I have my eye on Kawishiwi Lake right now. Any other favorites folks would suggest??? Thanks!!

I saw a bunch of grouse on gravel rd by Fenske cabins not sure about number of wallys in Fenske but there are some in there. They were making good progress on the campground clean up when I stayed at the cabins in early June.

I love Fall Lake campground. Nice sites, clean bathroom and shower, great boat ramp and pretty good fishing close to camp. Pretty close to Ely if you want to run to town for a nice dinner or supplies.

Kawishiwi is a very nice lake that has an excellent campground with 5 sites right on the lake. Whitefish also has a bunch of sites with a couple of lakeside ones. Silver Island has 2 very nice sites at the campground and several others that you could canoe to. All of these lakes are good for walleyes and I would imagine that any of the fire roads or old logging roads would be fine for a grouse hunting afternoon.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I had been looking at Whitefish in addition to Kawishiwi. I like the idea that it's on a canoe route to do some day trips. I don't think there is a wrong choice up there that time of year. Might just make my decision when I show up :)

A couple of other suggestions...Crescent Lake campground is very nice and has some great lakeside sites. It is a good fishing lake with walleyes and smallies and a pretty decent chance of hooking a muskie by accident! We often see them sniffing at our stringer of eyes, be aware, and I have caught a few there. It is a beautiful lake chock full of points, bays and islands, classic northern MN views. It is almost right across the road from the BWCA.


Crescent


Another good idea might be Two Island Lake campground. It is pretty remote and also a beautiful lake. For fishing I think this could be one of the best options, it is a very good fishing lake for walleyes and smallies. It also has some very nice lakeside sites if they are available. Stayed there a month or so ago and caught quite a few walleyes and smallies right from the shore of our campsite although the water tends to be pretty shallow close to shore. Nice spot.


Two Island


As you said, hard to go wrong up there. These are two of my favorites and a little less well known than some of the others. Wherever you go, enjoy.

I scoped out Crescent and Two Island as well. They both look like great lakes and campgrounds. Only downside would be some motor traffic, but that will probably way down in Oct anyway.
