Don't know what the water temps are up there, but from past experience the temp needs to be in the low 50's for them to really be on the hot bite.

Kawishiwi river was like 68 degrees F. today. Further south with temps in the mid 80's two days in a row temps have turned around and water temps approaching 70 degrees close to Brainerd. Starting to get in a pattern like last year with a real warm September. It suppose to start to cool off Sunday-will see.

A beauty. I really miss fishing for big gills and crappies. We used to catch them through the ice or just after ice out. Any gill over 9" was usually a dandy. Nice and thick, not like the super skinny gills we have here in Florida. Of course, the Shellcracker is a whole nother critter.

A 10 inch Bluegill in Minnesota in the north half of the state is extremely rare. Growth studies of Bluegills in the Brainerd area,Bluegills average just over a inch of growth per year of life. You do get a few to break out. Also after age 7 bluegills are all most gone here. A 8year old bluegill is a old bluegill. You get a few lakes where numbers are low they will grow a little faster due to being a little more food.
