Hello all -
My name is John and I live in northern California. I have posted on the fishing forum a couple of times but thought I would introduce myself here. I don't make it to canoe country a lot but I did make it there twice this year. My second trip was late August into September and I decided to try getting some time lapses which was a new thing for me - sunset, sunrise, afternoon clouds, rolling mist. I took a Olympus point and shoot and a Nikon DSLR and got several although we never got the five star sunset I was hoping for. All the shots were views across lakes from near camp when I thought there was something interesting happening or something might develop. I put them together into a three minute video. It is a nice way to look at canoe country. My hope is it will take you back to a time you were sitting near camp watching the clouds roll by or the evening light slowly fade. Take a look if you have the time. The link is below.

Very nice video! I live south of Yosemite. Was able to make one trip this summer to the BW. Do you usually fly back or drive. I have always driven. Larry

Very nice video. Allman Bros. music was a great choice for the video.

WELL DONE.

Nice job! Getting the rainbow was very cool too. I was on Russell just recently for the first time (Alice too). Very beautiful lake.

I was lucky to be in camp and ready to shoot when that rainbow happened. It did not last long and I was scratching my head trying to decide how to best shoot it and then figured I better just start shooting before it is gone. My battery died but I got most of it. It started as a full rainbow and tapered down to a small piece then disappeared. I reversed it in the video so that it started small and built up to a full rainbow.

Larry - I have driven all the way back once and did it so I could take my dog. I have flown to Montana a couple of times which is halfway and then driven the rest of the way with my brother in law. I have flown to Minneapolis and driven from there and flown to International Falls and driven from there. That is about all the possible ways to do it. I would like to get my own canoe but I would have to drive six days with it on may car which would be a bummer. I may look into storage in Atikokan. If I could find reasonably priced storage a boat purchase might work. FYI - I am in Davis.

Yeah, just stick all your equipment in a locker or - I bet someone in Ely wouldn't mind storing your stuff for cheaper than in a storage locker. If you put it out on this board you might get some takers.

Cool. How long were most of your sets and how many exposures per min?

Most of the set ups were around an hour. Sometimes longer if I was not sure how long the dusk would last. I would set the camera on a tripod and paddle out for evening fishing. In the last video you can see us coming back to camp. That was not planned but worked out nicely. We could hear the camera shooting every twenty seconds as we came in. The afternoon clouds shots were only half an hour since nothing was changing and a half hour was enough.

I started out getting a photo every 20 seconds but ended up doing them every 5 or 10 seconds. Data storage was not a problem but the time lapses used a lot of battery. Two to three hours would drain the battery but I had a charger. The DSLR used 30 or 36 pictures for 1 second of video so an hour of shooting would get you 20 seconds of video. The point and shoot used 10 pictures for 1 second of video. The DSLR quality was much better - bigger sensor, more frames per second and a wider format which was better for landscapes but it did have some condensation problems that ruined some shots. The first two shots in the video are DSLR and you can see they are better quality.

It was fun. Good thing to do when you are hanging out in camp. Tripod is very helpful if you have one. Thanks for asking.

So were you missing her or was she along? Loved the music! Classic!

Tom -
My dog Olive did not go. It is fun to have her along. I did think a lot of times that she would have liked this portage trail or that camp. Maybe next year for her.

Beautiful picture!

I have a beagle Indy and I have often thought how she would do up north on the canoe trail. I don't own a canoe and rent up north. I'd want to paddle with her closer home to see how it goes. Over the years, I've read several post here on preparing to paddle with a dog. Lots of resources here!

Tom -

I do like that picture. It is near Donner Summit last March. This year was the first time I took my dog. I would say go for it. Olive was reluctant to get in at first and she jumped in the canoe and the right out the other side into the lake. She fooled me. I thought I had it done and she went right out and into the lake. After that it went well. Her favorite part was the portages and running around camp looking for squirrels.

Cool dog, from Japan right? Luna loves going on canoe trips and I didn't take her this year. I missed her enthusiasm on the portages. It would make doing the hard work easier watching her having so much fun skipping around the rocks making it look so easy.

My dog is a duck toller - Aussie mix or so we think. She is from a rescue place so nobody knows for sure.

I like that dog life jacket. I think I will get one. My daughter would unfriend me if I let anything happen to the dog.

Here's a link to the one I have. I also bought Luna a coat for winter from here. Good quality stuff. D-fa Dogs

The "Float Doggy" life vest has a padded bottom which most other vests don't have and really saved my dog last year when she hopped out of the canoe and slipped on a big rock crashing straight down on her chest. She was stunned for a while but was fine after a minute. Without the padding/floatation material there she could have broken her ribs.
