Am I remembering this correctly? I don't need an entry permit beginning October 1rst? Is there some sort of self checkin, or do I just go? I'm trying to squeeze in a solo in early Oct.

There is a box at the entry point w/ self serve permits that you fill out, keep 1 copy on you, and put the other copy in the box. It might be a good idea to stop at the Ranger Station (they have them outside the building so you can grab them if they are not open) on your way through Grand Marais to grab one in case the box at the entry point is out of them. We keep a supply in the glove box and have needed them before because sometimes the box is empty. Usually the box is right at the EP landing but for some entries like Lizz the box is on the portage half way between Poplar Lake and Lizz Lake.

Are the ranger stations staffed year round?

If I were doing an October trip (which I'd love to do) I'd also check in with the station to have another point of "someone has my itinerary" if I was filling out a self service permit at the EP. Can't be too cautious.

Even if you have to watch the silly video one more time.

With the self issuing, you keep the top copy & put the other bottom copy in the box at the entry. Not sure how often those boxes are emptied and self issuing permits checked on.

Well no, a permit is required. But they are self issued with no limit to entry availability.
