canadian trip info

this link is a good resource to documents needed to be in canada.

oops. yes, you need more than the canadian fishing license. the RABC is the document that takes the longest to receive back in the mail.

Actually fishing is all we would be doing. We will be in motorized boats coming across prairie portage and just want to fish on the Canadian side without worry. We would not be making landfall of any kind except in case of emergency.

When you go to the Canadian side ( Quetico ), do you have to pull up your motor and paddle? Or do you have to take the motor off before you reach the other side of the motor restricted water?

When we went towards Quetico with a motor on a canoe one year we had to take the motor off before we got the motorized zone and chained it to a tree in the woods and picked it back up on the way back.

These are big boats, 25hp motors.

this is confusing. are you starting on the american side and then crossing PP to fish?
if so, you all need your RABC permit to enter canada from a remote location. your passport will not get you through PP ranger station as that is not a customs station.
i have no idea about your motor situation. thought this was a non-motorized area? doesn't matter if your motor is 3, 9.9, 10 or 25.

won't you also need a day use quetico permit?

when you say you are "coming across prairie portage" it makes me think you are coming from canada/quetico to the canadian side of basswood.

sorry if i'm making this more confusing than it might be.

If you cross the border - even if in the middle of Basswood and stay in a boat - you've crossed an international border and are in Canada and Quetico PP and all the regulations apply unless you fit in that very restricted use allowed by the Webster–Ashburton Treaty. And IIRC the Q Rangers carry GPSs and don't give you inches.

Passport/RABC, Q permit, Ontario outdoors card and fishing license, and no motors. Its not vague.

Ok some clarifications

We will be coming from moose lake chain, we will be permitted to fish on
Basswood, but have been told we cannot fish on the Canadian side. We will be in 16'lund boats with 25hp motors.
We use latourelles for all of our outfitting. We are all old and slow and do not have the energy for any canoeing.

We do this every couple of years, we look over to the Canadian side and have always wanted to venture and fish that side. Understandable if they do not allow motors of any kind though.

Better study up. You don't want to be in a situation on the Canadian side of the border, even in a boat in the middle of a lake. Latourelles should be able to give you good advice on this. Best bet is to stay inside the U.S. border.

Billconnor has it correct.

You can't have a motor.

Need an Ontario fishing license

Since that part of Canada is part of Quetico you would need a Quetico permit since you are entering the park. You could get a day permit at Prairie Portage last I checked it is 8-10 bucks a day.

Need an RABC for each person to cross the border into Canada.

Technically you need to stop by the U. S. Customs station in Ely to report you entered into Canada remotely and came back to the United States. So you need a passport or passport card for the US side.

Talk to your outfitter as well, but to be honest if they tell you something different than above I wouldn't trust it. My experience is some outfitters are not up on the rules as they should be. I think people have posted they were told it was okay to cross the border and visit Warrior Hill or Rebecca Falls which is incorrect...although unlikely to be busted :)

Take a canoe with you and paddle across the border.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you always used to be able to paddle or row a motorboat to the Canadian side of Basswood to fish, as long as the motor was shut off and raised up.
In the American no motor zone, you cannot have a motor with you.

I think you might be right TGO. I tried to dodge the issue. Best way to know to learn current enforcement is to call the office.

That sounds right to me. Like Bill said, call the office and make sure first.

I was curious about "legally" fishing below Rebecca falls so I called the customer service number listed on the Quetico park website. I spoke with a person who was very friendly and informative.
Unfortunately as some others have pointed out, it may be more trouble and costly than it's worth. You must have a RABC permit, Fishing license, and a park use permit for each day (or at least the day you get checked by a Canadian ranger - LOL). And that's assuming you don't camp overnight anywhere in their park.

License - $30.00 for a week (conservation version)
Outdoor card $10.00 (needed to buy a fishing licence - lasts 3 years)
RABC permit - $30.00 good for 1 year (Edited per below comment)
Day use fee - $11.25 per day (you could plan ahead and only buy certain days to save money)

$70.00 per person plus $11.25 for each day you plan to cross into the Quetico.

A passport does not substitute for an RABC. You'd need both if not crosding into Canada at a staffed border crossing like International Falls/Ft Francis or Pigeon River.
