Sad story of a paddler who was murdered on the Amazon. I spent a week with my dad last summer in rehab and I saw the old folks who slept all days in wheelchairs. Life semi-everlasting often isn't pretty. I wouldn't take the risk she took, but I understand her taking it.

Very sad... What she had in courage and chutzpah, she lacked in common sense.

What a shame that there are places on the planet with such cruel and evil people. I have always hated pirates.

I would not have been someone who would of spoken to her for several hours relating my paddling experiences on the river thereby stoking her imagination. The conversation would of been short and sweet........."Don't go alone if you want to live"

I also didn't know it was dangerous until I read her story and clicked on some of its links.

A few years ago I read a book about a guy that canoed from the US (upper Missisppi I think) and with one or two sons and then went through south America. They nearly got killed a few times...I wish I could remember the name of the book...Between thieves, murderer, corrupt government officials...it wasn't good. Now I will be tortured until I can remember it...
I don't think demon possession ended 2000 years ago...still people possessed with incredible evil.

Paddle to the Amazon

Paddle to the Amazon is a great read. I couldn't put it down when I was reading it. I bet it was 20 years ago when I received a copy from my brother for Christmas.

I have a lot of paddling trips on my "bucket list" when I retire in a couple of years ... but I don't think there will any trips south of the U.S border for this paddler. Going up north is definitely safer.

It was a miracle they got out of some of those situations...and that book was written over 25 years ago.

Wow. A sad story but well written. Thank you for sharing it. I definitely was not aware of this either. It sounds like a very sad state of affairs in that part of the world. Sorry to hear

Bad stuff always in the amazon. I had a friend who paddled the amazon headwater streams in the 70's. He got a parasite in his brain, it took the Mayo Clinic years to figure it out. A fairly good book on a 1940s trip in the north amazon and Orinoco is Journey to the far amazon It's adventure travel on steroids. Check it out

Just not sure why anybody in this day and age could possibly think that a trip like this by yourself could be safe.

Horrible that it happened to her but people take risks every day, so can't fault her for wanting to live life the way she wanted, even if many smart people suggested otherwise.

It wasn't that long ago that under taking expedition like this being properly armed.

Would have been a considered mandatory.

There are many people who are very naïve about things and the happenings in the world.

Many of them have died or just disappear while traveling in some out of the way places.

For those that have lived they have great story to tell.

Naivity and over-confidence has killed a LOT of people over the years. A solo trip down the Amazon has to be the definition of foolishness--no matter how well one is armed. Safety (relatively speaking) on such a trip could only be had by traveling with a group of skilled (and armed) people. A very sad and tragic, but not at all surprising, ending.

You said exactly what I was thinking. There are some places where I would not travel to or put myself in jeopardy. I would add that the list is getting bigger every day. A woman traveling in drug infested territory is just ridiculous. Someone in her life should have stopped her.

There was a write up a few years back in Backpacking Mag about a woman backpacking solo in Pakistan or Nepal....maybe Afghanistan ...cant remember which. Very experienced, ended up missing. Presumed dead. Very sad.

Too late for that.

But the quoted poem was meant to speak for Emma who can't get her point across now. It is a sad story but she was doing what she wanted to do and followed her Lone Trail. I give her credit and my understanding for doing that.

A man traveling in drug infested territory is just as ridiculous. It was her life and she chose what to do with it. You and I can think it was foolish, but she was an adult with the privilege of making her own ba
