I have not yet jumped in as a down quilt user. Ran across a deal that has me thinking about it. Massdrop is offering the 20° Revelation quilt for $219.99.
I have not yet used Massdrop either. Someone on this site pointed out a past deal. As I loosely understand it, Massdrop makes a deal with a manufacturer , for a price break on a set number of units. Normal price is listed as $260, though it looks like Massdrop spec'd 800 fill power down instead of 850. When Massdrop gets commitments for a set number of units, the deal goes ahead. Anyone happy with their 20° Revelation Quilt, go ahead, sell me on it and maybe I'll join the drop.

I use 850 filled 10d Reg/Wide 20f Rev in a hammock. Great footbox design. Super toasty, and doesn't seem to overheat in slightly warmer temps like 50F, lowest I've done is around freezing. Very light weight fabric shell, so thin I'm mindful to be gentle. Super compact-able.

Has two elastic strap connections with flat clips to go around a pad for ground usage, only complaint was the straps would loosen with all my rolling over. Fixable, but I stopped using it on the ground. I got a wide because I'm a roller, and the belly is big.

Looks like the offering you posted uses slightly heavier fabric and down, so its like 15% heavier. So, reg/reg is 19.4oz for the 10d/850 and 22.8oz for the massdrop one.

My dog says its too warm under it for his tastes.

I’ve been very happy with my Revelation long wide quilt.

I have 2 EE quilts, and they are worth every penny. Locally made (MN), the quality is beyond compare and the company stands behind their work.

Both of mine are 20 degree quilts. I do not like being stuffed inside a mummy bag, and finding quality rectangular bags my size is a joke. The bottom of a sleeping bag provides no warmth in any case due to compression, so why buy a bag? Buy a quilt. The EE quilts have zip up foot boxes, and you can also buy a full zip up, but I do not know why you would want to that that as, mentioned above, there is no insulation value in the bottom of a bag.

EE is a top notch business! You purchase something from them that you do not like, tell them why and they will address it.

Another thumbs up here. I've had my quilt for 2 years now. Couldn't be happier. Light, compact, warm and WELL MADE.

Here's a hint.........

Sanborn sells the same quilt. Enlightened makes them and puts a sanborn logo on them. Sanborn sells them as their "Scout Quilt".

Due to their popularity, the wait time on an EE Rev 20 was 12 weeks when I was shopping 2 years ago. I had the Scout Quilt in 5 days. Things may have changed since then, but, worked out great for me.

That massdrop deal sounds great. If you're in the market for a down quilt I'd jump on it.

Just a heads up, if you read the fine print it says the massdrop version of this quilt is not made in MN, but in China.

Whoa, it does say made in China. That's a deal breaker right there in my book. A true EE quilt would be made in Winona MN. I have an EE Revelation 20 degree top quilt and love it. But I also have quilts by Hammock Gear and Underground Quilts and love them equally well. Personally if I was looking at getting another I would go with the Hammock Gear Econ quilts. Top notch quality down quilts and an amazing price point.

Interesting, reading some of the comments and then looking on EE’s website it appears that some of their on-the-shelf quilts are now sewn in the same factory in China and then stuffed in MN. Not trying to turn this into a derail about their manufacturing practices. I’ve been thinking about one of these quilts and was tempted by this deal.

I guess their outsourcing explains why their lead times have shortened recently. I'll still buy one someday.

I love my EE Revelation 10 degree that I got last year during their Black Friday sale. I used it on 2 bwca trips last year and won't go back to a sleeping bag. The straps it comes with worked great at keeping it closed around me on my May 5 trip when overnight temps were in the low 20's and then I used it without the straps for my Memorial Day trip when overnight temps were in the 40's. It's so light and packs down so small.

Unshavenman....... thanks for the tip on the Hammock Gear Econ quilts. My daughters love my quilt and want one for themselves. They have just about outgrown their jr size sleeping bags and the price of the Econ Burrow is great. I think they will each be getting a HG Econ quilt for Christmas.

Ducks, you will not regret the purchase. I bought the Econ Incubator 20 degree bottom quilt and the Econ Burrow 30 degree top quilt to have on hand in case my daughter wants to hang with me, and the quality is wonderful. The top quilt actually stays out and is used almost nightly in the lower level when we watch a movie.

I have two Revolt/Revolution sets - a 900 fill 10 degree pair, and an 850 fill 20 degree pair. Love them.

I'm also a big fan of MassDrop. Wouldn't call it a viable "shopping" site, but if you've had your eye on something and it happens to come along, or you see an item you hadn't given much thought to, but piques your interest, it works well. Dangerous place for an impulse buyer!

unshavenman or any other knowledgeable member,
I am a novice to the hang game. I penetrate the BWCA annually in the fall (Sept.-Oct.). Last year I slept in an ENO Doublenest with an outfitter sleeping bag and my ground pad. I recall being chilly and annoyed from adjusting the ground pad. Hammock camping without proper equipment is only recommended if it's early in the adventure when liquor rations are plentiful.. Anyway Hammock Gear Econ Incubator 20 degree bottom quilt and the Econ Burrow 30 degree top quilt are in my cart for a grand total of $341.49. I just need reassurance from some members that I'm making the right decision. Will this Hammock Gear set up last me long enough to enjoy the BWCA before it is ruined by copper mining?

Thanks! Peace be with you.

Those are exactly the two quilts that I would buy if I were you, and you wouldn't need to purchase any others in the future. The temps you chose are good for your shoulder seasons and will actually carry you through the summers up there very nicely as well. Pull the trigger and enjoy! Be sure to dial in the underquilt to your hammock before your trip. Once it's dialed in you can just attach and forget, but you don't want to be wasting precious camping time doing so. Just my 2 cents.

+1

Excellent choices, indeed.

Hey guys, is a "top quilt" for hammock use the same as the ones used by ground sleepers?

Pretty much, and while most, if not all, can be used for either, your preferred features may vary depending on intended use. For example, some ground dwellers prefer a footbox that opens flat (vs a sewn footbox preferred by some hangers, especially for colder weather quilts), and albeit with a weight and pack-ability penalty, wider is generally preferred for going to ground to reduce potential draftiness. The other big one that comes to mind is pad-attachment straps (more important for sleeping on terra firma).

SinglePortage, as Othello says. The quilt itself is the same, just used differently.
Ground dwellers are recognizing some of the benefits of top quilts that hangers have enjoyed for years. For hangers, it's difficult to get into a sleeping bag when you're in a hammock, thus the top quilt was born.
