Sorry about short notice: Bhouse and Wally13 and I are going to meet for an overnighter at Lake McBride (Iowa) State Park on November 4 to 5. Any interested souls are more than welcome to join us. Plenty of paddling opportunity on the lake, though probably chilly weather (campfire weather for sure). Forecast is 50's daytime, around 30 at night, with near full moon; at least the moon part is accurate, at this point. If you google a map, we will be at the south ("non-modern") campground. You do not need to be a Hawkeye to join us!

Hi Old Salt,
Sounds like Jeff (Downstrm) is camping there Friday night. I may try to get over Friday night or Saturday morning. Bhouse (and Ben's son, Tom?) and Mike on Saturday? Potluck and camp Saturday night. Paddling opportunities Saturday and Sunday (easy carry down to the water from campground).

Potluck, okay. I will bring my 2 qt dutch oven. A meat dish or desert dish, taking requests? I will also bring eggs and such for a breakfast dish on Sunday.
I hope to get there early afternoon on Saturday. McBride is a nice lake with some good paddling options.

I should be able to make it. Iowa sweet corn I can do, along with some fresh hard cider. Is hanging allowed in the park or do I need to pull the tent out of retirement?

Ray,
Got down to 25 here in Quad Cities last night. My tomatoe plants are all shriveled up from the heavy frost.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at Lake McBride this weekend. I will check in with you before Friday to go over details .

I hope to make it out later on Saturday for a few hours after the Iowa/Ohio State game. I'd like to meet some new people with similar interests. I don't plan on camping but it would be nice to sit around a fire and share stories. I'll bring along some venison sausage. I have to make some room for this years batch, hopefully.

Sounds good. We are about in your backyard, looks like.
Ben, I think we are pretty good for protein on Saturday night. I'll bring chili beans and brats and maybe some asiago bread. So, I wouldn't sweat anything time-consuming with the dutch oven for then, if you are already helping your son on that project.... Or, a desert, if you want?

Hi Mike, Looks like about seven folks for Saturday potluck (a couple not camping on Saturday night?) and about three other possible. But certainly room for anybody that decides to come on out without posting!
Will be at the "non-modern" or "primitive" campground (i.e., no electric, no RV pads) on the south part of the park. From Solon, take 5th Street west out of town for about 3 miles. As you enter the park, and before crossing the bridge, look for a signed turn off to the left. Park guys told me that the campsites are on "walk-in" status, this time of year (i.e., need not use reservation system; $6 in envelope to register at site). There are open sites and sites with more trees (for hammock campers), tables and fire rings, water hydrants (still operational) and a privy.

Yeah, the park is only about 10 minutes or so from my house. I plan on coming out pre-fed so no need to factor me in the meal. The deer sausage will be a pass around snack. If you have too much food it will make for a good breakfast too. The weather forecast isn't looking too bad at this time.

quote rtallent: " Sounds good. Bhouse sometimes makes a dutch oven egg breakfast that could put the Presbyterian Women to shame...."
That sounds great to me. Bhouse what say you? What do we need to bring to make it happen?

The dutch oven is sooo easy. I am planning on a shepherd's pie with chicken for the evening meal and the egg, sausage and biscuit breakfast. I also have a drip coffee maker for my camp stove so will have a pot of java. The two quart oven will serve up to six and with the truck handy leftovers will go home with me.
I pulled out most of the gear and clothing earlier today.

Hmmm... I go canoeing to go fishing. I go fishing to catch fish. I catch fish to eat fish. You may be right Ray.

Not selling anything. I’ll be presenting on “DIY Alaska: Traveling the Alaska Highway “ , a great wilderness road trip to the Last Frontier. I see you are in Mpls so hope to see you there.
Feel free to come down to the Iowa gig. I’m also from Minnesota, near Rochester. It will be a great time.

Very cool! I’ll be sure to attend your presentation and say hi.

I will bring jalapeno corn bread and baked sweet potatoes.
Does anyone have contact with Plumbbob? He usually tries to make these mini-wings.
I am planning on camping Friday, night, but will head down to Muscatine early on Saturday for a church meeting/breakfast and will be back at camp around noon.

I have been lurking for a couple weeks. Sorry for the late sign-up. There will be two of us (my middle son and I). We will plan to bring a desert. Probably an apple/cranberry cobbler of sorts. I have another son (youngest) at U of Iowa we will need to duck out and visit sometime during the weekend. Looking forward to meeting everyone and hopefully getting a little late season paddling in.

Welcome Michwall and son!,
Looks like gametime is 2:30pm in Iowa City, so traffic may get a bit congested in spots prior to that, but usually becomes easy, once game underway. Probably you already know that, if your son is at the U.

Thanks! Didn't know there was a game this weekend. Was planning to leave central Illinois about 9:30am Sat. Have an appointment earlier that day so can't leave earlier. May think about leaving later to avoid traffic. Cuts down on daylight hours left and paddling time on Saturday though.

Should be ok coming east on I-80 west from Quad Cities toward Iowa City. Truck traffic on I-80 always slows things down a bit but football fans going to game should not be too bad.
Before you get to Iowa City you will take Hwy1 North towards Solon and you will be away from any game traffic.
Looking forward to seeing everyone. I will not be getting there until 6 pm as I have to attend visitation and funeral up in Lanark IL from 11 am to 3 pm on Saturday. A good friend of mine's son (age 25) was killed in a head on crash on Tuesday near Cuba City Wi and he died in transit during airlift to Madison WI. Just awful to lose a son so young.
DRIVE SAFE.

How sad for your friend's family of the 25 year old! Prayers sent.

I am planning to go ... should be there mid-afternoon on Saturday. In reading through the posts, it sounds like we might have enough food? If so, I can bring a cooler with various beverages. Otherwise, I could whip up a batch of chili.
Still trying to convince myself to pull the solo out of shed storage ... also, looks like rain suits might be a good idea just to be safe :-)
From NWS: Saturday: Rain showers likely in the morning, then a chance of sprinkles in the afternoon. High around 50. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of showers 70 percent.
Saturday Night:Mostly cloudy. Patchy drizzle. Low in the mid 40s. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph.
Sunday:Cloudy with a 50 percent chance of rain showers. High in the upper 50s.

Ray - sounds like you have it covered, so I probably won't bring the chili. If there are any other holes in the menu don't hesitate to let us know. I will just plan to bring a cooler with various beverages. I do have an old green Coleman 2-burner I could bring if you need any additional cooking capability. See y'all tomorrow!

The group at Lake McBride had a great evening together. While overcast and foggy Saturday night the blanket kept temps pretty much in the mid 40's. Little to no wind made for great paddling and the local pelican flock was a pleasant add. Colors in the oaks were still prime and some sun would have made it just superb. Too much really great food and lots of story telling.
Free firewood and a great lakeside campsite, only $6 per night. What a deal.
Others will add their comments, but my close is there was lots of talk about doing it again.

I agree it was a great time at Lake Macbride... outstanding food and company!
Here are a few photos ... Saturday supper was done pretty much all by headlamp, so the photos will be on the dark side.
The group shot was taken on Sunday morning. Back row, left to right: Ray T, Martin K, Ben H, Wally13, Gary H, Front row: Michwall2, Peter W, Old Salt
We also enjoyed visiting with Mashuga and Downstream on Saturday, but didn't make the Sunday group shot.

Thanks to Ray, Ben, and Mike for planning and organizing this gathering. We are discussing doing this about a month earlier to reduce weather and daylight issues. Nothing has been decided about dates or location. It was great meeting some new friends and reconnecting with some I hadn’t seen in a while. I think we had 10 in attendance which was great. We were well fortified with hot and delicious food.

Thanks for the chance to meet everyone! It was a super place for a gathering like this. Beautiful fall colors, great paddling and sleeping weather, amazing food and lots of comraderie. Thanks to our organizers and I look forward to next year.

Michwall's son, Peter, helped the old guys figure out the technical framing on a new tent in the dark; as well, he used some tubing and a metal nozzle to expedite the campfires! Good to have some young brains along!
Thanks to all! (couple pics: Michwall and Peter in Northwind (?), Downstream Jeff in a modified Royalex solo)
