In a recently deleted thread many members of this site suggested that tacos are incompatble with the northwoods zeitgest, but, oh, I do beg to differ. For Hughie's Taco House in Grand Marais provides, through their puffy tacos, what nutritionists would recommend, if they gave it a moment's thought, as the the most beneficial allowance of meat, cheese, puffy taco shells, beer, Fanta, and hot sauce to replenish lost calories and satiate the thirst of BWCA visitors who have completed a rigorous tour of the northern wilds. Here is an illustrative picture of the healing balm to be found there, from a visit I made after a solo BWCA journey last August. Can there be any disagreement?

If the thread was deleted then there must have been good reasons behind it. Why are you bringing it back up. To me this “taco” thread Will only cause trouble

They are the best tacos and good spicy food after a trip is always good. They could franchise that place.

Tacos do sometimes cause Me trouble, but they are worth it.

I love those puffy tacos shells. Wish more places did that.

The deleted thread concerned the recent closing of a Mexican restaurant in Ely. Things got contentious in ways wholly unrelated to tacos, which is no doubt why it was banished. I'm just here to celebrate Hughie's.

I didn't know Hughie's existed, I'm going to have to check it out.
I enjoy good Mexican food whether I'm in the desert southwest or northern MN.

How could tacos ever be controversial? I don't no anyone who doesn't love tacos.

Fish tacos are one of my favorite meals on the trail. The tortillas last a long time and pack well. The fish, well, they are everywhere. Add in some Chipotle sauce, lemon, rice and most importantly some cilantro and you have a great meal.

I live in Texas. Puffy tacos are woefully under-represented here. There's one place I know of that makes them and I have to get one every time we go there.

Well some people were dissing tacos in the other thread .....

like who would ever want tacos before or after a trip. No matter the style of food you like, if it is well prepared it is all good.

Thats funny because its true.

On the other hand there is little doubt I would demolish a plate of tacos coming out of the bush if they were put in front of me and I bet I would like it just fine.

Neither can I, but I'm not a big Mexican food guy. On the other hand, the first stop I make in GM when I get out is the Java Moose for the biggest ice cream they have and a double espresso :).

We've had them a couple of times and enjoyed them. But this year my nephews opted for.... I won't mention the name, but the local pizza establishment. After decades of promoting them, my "Love affair" with them is over. The pizza quality wasn't as good and the service was poor, actually EXTRAORDINARILY poor. My $$ is too hard earned to waste it on aloof, surly service and cool, unfinished pizza. So it will be Hughies next time?

I had them only once in the bush and the cat I was with brought in an onion and sautéed it in Parkay over an open fire and then added the filets. We also had some small individual packets of salsa. Very good!!

I always bring in tortilla's or pita's, rice, onion, garlic, red pepper, tomato, cilantro, and chili pepper. I've started to smoke my own chili's (poblano's, anaheim's and jalapeno's), dehydrate them, then grind them into a powder - it's very good. Add some fish filet's and you're set.

It's not the location that is the issue. It's the mistaken idea that thankfully seems to be going away, that people north of Oklahoma don't like authentic Mexican or Tex/Mex food, and the restaurant operators dumb down the options, make the food bland and flavorless. Used to be, people from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, etc. would try Mexican restaurants when they traveled because their friends would be excited about the Tex/Mex place they found in Indianapolis, and the food would be terrible. That's how the stereotype started. Nowadays, there is a food movement in the country and it's more about authentic cuisine wherever you go, and now being a long way from Maine doesn't mean you can't get a good lobster roll or if you're in California you can't get a good cheesesteak.

Now I can get authentic Chicago style pizza in Dallas since Gino's opened up shop down here... and other shops have opened recently too that are better than the other "deep dish" options that we used to be limited to, that weren't good.

If you're looking for pizza in G.M. try My Sisters Place if you haven't had it before..... IMO their pizza is very good. We gave up on the pizza place in town several years ago after the first time having pizza at My Sisters Place one year and have not looked back.

Whoa, dude you sound like you got it going on. One of these days I'm going to do a "food" type trip where all the meals will be excellent. I will pack in BWJ food pack complete with ice and do steaks and REAL fish tacos (as per Mc2mens) etc. Nowadays I eat oats in the morning, cliff bars for lunch and some dehydrated beans and rice or dehydrated pasta prima vera and some fish for dinner..........and all for 25+ days. I'm still happy but the base camp / good food type trip sounds like fun as well especially if your with a group.

I too am envious of those whom can do the extended trips! 12 days in a row is all I can get off, can't get off work two weekends in a row.

I like fish and I like tacos, but I just couldn't combine the two? Kinda like chicken on pizza, just not my cup of tea (LOL)

Ozark Paddler I feel ya! I too couldn't even think of fish tacos without getting a disgusted look on my face. Then I got brave on the advice of a waiter. They were excellent and now I don't think twice about getting them. You don't HAVE to use taco seasoning on the fish but maybe some cajun spices or whatever. Soft shells are the best.

As per chicken on pizza? Bet you haven't tried it ;-) Of course it has to be a white sauce, thin crust with spinach. Ever try diced chicken in spaghetti sauce instead of ground beef? Excellent!

As per being envious of my 25+ day trips. Not all is cupcakes and unicorns in MT land. Last year it was work 7 days a week from Sept to May without a day off. No Holidays, no weekends. This year is likely much the same. So I cash in with one big chunk.........its sort of what keeps me going. Wife is not so pleased "why do you have to go for so long"? ;-(

Before the Spanish arrived in the Valley of Mexico, the natives there were eating fish wrapped in corn tortillas (tlaxcalli).

Heheheh, you're correct! I never have TRIED fish tacos nor chicken pizza. Kinda strange I guess that, as a nurse, nothing nauseates me. We sometimes take care of some really gross things in between bites. Why would the chicken and fish bother me? The mind is a funny thing (LOL)!

I'm pretty fortunate that I have a schedule that allows me to be off during the week, when the river, the barbershop, the store, etc. is quieter. But every once in awhile I'm envious of those whom can take off for weeks and months at a time to satisfy that wilderness itch that i have to satisfy by reading books and trip reports!

Yes OP sounds like you have an excellent situation. Work the weekends sounds familiar but not working through the week sounds foreign and almost inconceivable. Plus the Ozarks are a very beautiful area. I went through once and liked the area very much.

OK........heres a challenge. Try you some fish tacos. Go to a decent place and give them a shot. If you don't like them send me the bill ;-)

They really are a great option while in canoe country as well. Yummy!

Not a taco, but thought I'd post anyway. MT brought it up earlier, I do like to eat well while tripping in the BWCA. This is an easy meal made this September while camping on Horseshoe Lake with my sweetheart. Breaded walleye, rice, and medley of vegetables (carrots, green beans, fresh and dehydrated red pepper, onion and garlic). Could easily spice this up and stuff it into a tortilla and call it a taco.
