Had to throw this in since we did movies.
What book or books do you start and can't quit until done.
For me it's The Hobbit.
I start reading The Hobbit then move on to The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, The Silmarillion and I can't quit until I read Smith of Wooton Major and Farmer Giles of Ham.

You must be the only human who can't stop reading the Silmarillion once they start it.

+1 I like Tolkien as much as the next guy, but can't go very long before setting that one down.

Every winter I read "The Long Winter" by Laura Ingalls Wilder, my favorite of the series. Makes me really appreciate being warm and well-fed; makes me count my many blessings. Once I start it, it's tough putting it away for the night.

Arctic Adventure by Peter Freuchen. Fascinating life in a hard place.

Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier (one of the few works of fiction I read/ movie was terrible)

Sea of Thunder............ but perhaps it doesn't count because I listen to it on audio book.

My Grandfathers son.......Autobiography of Clarence Thomas. As a result of that book I can unreservedly say he is one of my favorite Americans.

All of Peter Freuchen's books are amazing. I have read them all (5 I believe, since I' ve given them all away for other people to enjoy).

He and Russmussen were the first people ever, to cross the Greenland continental ice sheild and document it. He also lived among the native people and and married a native woman. He lost part of one leg due to being frozen in one of his snow shelters after the shelter froze him in by turning into ice. Plus he helped safe many jewish people from the Nazi's by running them to various Scandinavian countries. He know Stalin and Hitler, etc.

Anyway, he was an amazing person, none of the like we'll ever see again. Please find and read his books. I'm sure that you will enjoy them.

I love Tolkien, but the Simarillion is one of the few books I've started that I just couldn't bfinish.

Yes I have advocated for folk to pick his stuff up previously........but as the old saying goes...... something about leading a horse to water yada, yada. I also gained great insight into the humanity of the eskimo people. Fascinating read on so many different levels.

While Rasmussen was described by Freuchen in such legendary superhuman terms I found his (Rasmussen) writing to be lacking the readability that Freuchen has. I didn't know Freuchen has 5 books, I only have two. Let me borrow yours for a few years ;-) I picked up Arctic Adventure in a used bookstore.......it was obviously very old and I figured with the cheesy name it would be 2nd rate. Glad I was so wrong. Probably time to read it again.

Here, I will make it easy. You can thank me later ;-)

Thanks giving me some ideas for reading during the dark days of winter.
For those interested, the Fairbanks Borough Public Library lists twelve books by Peter Freuchen. Inter-library-loan is a great & cheap way to get good books. If they turn out to be something you really like and would want to re-read then resort to buying. Of course your taxes have already been used for for the Library and it's services. A great way to spend my tax dollars.

For a pure addiction rush, the entire Lee Child "Jack Reacher" series. Alex Berenson is good too especially if I'm looking to withdraw for a while. But most good books have a similar effect, I'm happy to say.

I enjoy the Jack Reacher series also, but they are hard to get through the online library- there is always a wait list. Jeffrey Deaver is another author I can't put down.

Gee whiz 12 books by Freuchen? Who knew. There is no doubt he can turn a phrase.

And yes I would agree with you that public libraries are a good use of tax dollars. Typically they are funded via state and local taxes and fall into the category of being applied to all people evenly. One has only to choose to avail themselves of the service.
