Dang that’s crazy cold, I got out of town just in time. It’s 75 and sunny here in Laguna Beach California. Only ice I’m worried about is in my drink.

Don't know about either, will check tomorrow and get back to you. I'm sure vehicles will be driving on the ice, whether or not it's smart is another subject. :)

Harv, talked to Smitty's this morning and there is about 12 inches of ice on Snowbank, and they will start plowing their road on the lake today.
I would assume Burntside may have about 8 inches +, but still would not drive on either one with anything other than an ATV or snowmobile.

12/29/2017 08:02AM
Extreme Cold even IA. Sw Ia was near -20F Wednesday Am and some areas of the state that receive the most snow today will be flirting with -25F - to -30F late weekend. That is without the wind and record breaking for many sites.

I see Much of the Midwest is colder than Alaska today and as a whole for Dec. 28th the world was warmer than normal. Maybe soon we will get a little warmth back.
I don't know about this cold front but last year once they talked about warmer air in Siberia and Alaska causing the cold air up the extreme north being pushed by the energy of warmer air.
Their is so much involved in the world temps as a whole. It is like one big mixing bowl you keep adding chemicals and how they react-wind-oceoncurrents etc.

Typical weather patterns = when AK is below normal for temps the Upper Midwest is usually very warm. And vice versa. The weather patterns that dictate this is all about atmospheric pressure at the surface and aloft and where they set up. That is a fact. In this case- parts of central and even Southern IA are going to be colder then areas in C. MN based on the placement of the High Pressure. Would not be surprised to see a few low spots in IA hit -35F. That is about 1 in every 15 -20 years if it happens. Overall - it's coldest Holiday season on avg. for the Upper Midwest since the late 70's. In a few days ( if not now) most people will have no recollection of the very warm air earlier in the month. Mother Nature has no memory when it comes to extremes and humans are worse.

And these same cycles have been going on since long before humans began the destruction of the earth.

Yup, and because we have changed the chemistry (and heat trapping physics) of the atmosphere, the worldwide incidents of record hot days outnumber record cold days by at least 5 to 1.

Agree. It amazes me as we learn more thru science advances is how wind-water currents are so dependent on the changing temperature grids worldwide. The tipping point of these major shifts have just begun.

Back to the weather at present. We have -22 degrees F. in the Mille lacs area. One thing is were getting good ice. 10 days out it looks like getting back to more normal and I plan more outdoor activities. If it is not windy 0 degrees is really not that bad.

Thanks WhiteWolf for your Expert input and always enjoy Weather related knowledge.

We had a high of -5 below on the hill in Duluth today.
The wife and I wanted to go Fat Tire Biking this afternoon but it was just too hot.
Instead we opted for a comprimise, and went inner-tubing down the Saint Louis River in Jay Cooke State Park just south of Duluth.
It was a glorious afternoon with the ice fog on the river, which was exemplified by our
breathing as we peacefully floated beneath a double Sun Dog.

PS, I'm trying to post pics but my camera froze up.

Yeh maybe it is time to do the old hot water in the air trick and watch it vaporize. We have -15 degrees at 6:45 PM tonight.

Yes Embarrass river valley and swamps are at a lower elevation. They say the cold sinks into this area. I am sure you remember the -60 of 1996. I remember 1996 also had a lot of snow and it won't "set up" because of the cold. Winter travel was the worst I ever remember that year. I think Isabella had about 12 feet of snow that year.

Yes
1995-96 was extremely cold and lot of snow. 1996-97 was almost as bad. I remember winter camping in march and yes a lot of snow. It was also very hard on wildlife of all kinds. I remember a Canadian jay came into our camp and he got a free snack, but than just fell over dead and all skin and bones. The jays died in huge numbers because of the extreme cold that held on forever, and for many years seen very few.
Farther south by Longville it was estimated that 90% of the fawns and 50% of the does died because of snow depth and the cold combined in 95-96.
Even the White pine needles turned brown from the cold and dehydration.

No I didn't sleep out in Embarrass as some did that cold night.

I remember that winter well. On the night Tower/Embarrass hit -60 F, it was a "balmy" -42 F at my house and neither of our cars would start. Had to get a ride to work from a neighbor who lives about ten miles away.

I heard also that some "hardy souls" slept out that night (it was actually two mornings that Tower hit -60F ) and that they took an Ethanol-filled thermometer to a swamp and supposedly got -70F. Many of the temp records we have (or could have) both min/max have issues with them and their is serious bias involved on both sides on exactly how these temps get verified for accuracy. Precip is even worse with advance of automated tipping buckets. It's a long story.
Coldest New Years Eve ever here in DSM on record as both min/max and min temp were broken/tied. That's all I know. Happy New Year!!

Spent a few nights outdoors Ely way last week. The coldest we saw on our thermometer was -34 but that was just me checking at a random moment when I woke up during the night/early morning. Luckily for us there was very little wind and when Thursday got above 0 it felt like T-shirt weather.

Talked to a few other people on New Years Eve, Burntside ice as thin as 4 inches in some spots, 6 to 8 inches in others. Hard to believe when we had a week of -20 to -37 and only abut three inches of snow on the lake.
