I'm sitting at home, 2°.
I have strep throat.
I'm watching the Bears..
It's not that I'm feeling bad enough....
It's only 7 minutes into the game.
Think I'll go out to the garage and get my ice poles ready to go...

It is beautiful and peaceful during the winter season. I was contemplating a hunting trip for brookies this weekend but it is too cold for me now. Ten years ago maybe. I sure would love to be standing on (enter lake name here) jigging for monster brookies! GO VIKINGS ! Marc

-20F at my house just outside of Des Moines. First time -20F since I moved in 1998 and first time likely since all the records fell in FEB 1996. -20F with only a few inches of snow on the ground-- this air mass would have smashed records even further if the snow depth and extent of it had been deeper like it was in FEB 96'. Very similar setup weather map wise.

I would rather be in Pasadena watching the Rose Parade. It’s a balmy 46 degrees there. I’ve been walking in this sub zero stuff the past few days and the wind is really hard on my face. I try to cover it but the frost build up bugs me. I walked into a restaurant after a 6 mile walk and I could tell from the look on the workers faces that the frostnip on my cheeks was visible. It looks like the white pads on a Bandaid against a bright rose colored background. I believe it kind of scares them so I just face the window and let it thaw slowly.
I must be a little sadistic to take that abuse but I like to see how I stand against it. I could go to SoCal for the winter anytime now but there is a certain honesty about this weather that I like. Plus fuel is about $4.00 a gal. there.

Definitely not crazy. -7 right now and I just got in from a 2 hr cross country ski through the forest under the full moon. I'll take that over a beach any day of the week.

Why would more snow depth and greater area of snow coverage aided in lower temperatures? Inquiring minds want to know...

Snow reflects the sun's radiation diminishing warming caused by sunlight heating the ground and vegetation. Albedo is the measure of the ability of a surface to reflect solar radiation- snow has a very high albedo, dirt and ground; not so much.

+1- also a deeper snowpack (especially a fresh one and in that case the most recent cold snap was aided by it) allows slightly more radiational cooling at night then a shallow one and thus a deep snowpack and large extent of it often "feed backs"on itself prolonging and in some cases intensifying cold air. It's often stated in the field that a fresh-deep snow pack compared to bare/brown ground is worth at least 10 degrees (cooler) at night.

Whatever the meteriological explanation, cold temps at the Duluth Basecamp lead to fantastic sauna cool down conditions!

I never been to the Grand Canyon or like the Arches, I always thought maybe this would be a nice time with temps moderate and maybe fewer tourists?

Those places can still get cold at this time Pinetree. Especially the G.C. In my opinion late October early November or late March and April. Warmer and longer days. Tourist don’t usually get up until 9:00am so you can get a good start if you get up early.

Visited the Grand Canyon in November a few years back. Stayed a night in Flagstaff and it cooled off well below freezing at night. I think I also remember seeing snow near the canyon. What I don't remember seeing are any lakes unfortunately.....
