Preparing to enter my first (and I guest last since the system is on its way out?) lottery for overnight motor permits, entering on either Fall or Moose. I understand you make a selection for EP and dates and are allowed to enter 4 "back-up" EPs/dates. Couple of questions:

1.) Are there certain days of the week that are generally easier to secure? Like entering on a Monday vs Saturday vs mid-week?

2.) Does it make more sense to choose entirely different weeks/EP for the back-up selections, or to just bump my 3-day period back 1 day for each alternate and keep my top desired EP? For example, this:

Top choice: EP 25 entering Sun 6/10, leaving Wed 6/13
Alternate 1: EP 25 entering Sun 6/17, leaving Wed 6/20
Alternate 2: EP 25 entering Sun 6/24, leaving Wed 6/27
Alternate 3: EP 24 entering Sun 6/10, leaving Wed 6/13
Alternate 4: EP 24 entering Sun 6/17, leaving Wed 6/20

-VS- this:

Top choice: EP 25 entering Sun 6/10, leaving Wed 6/13
Alternate 1: EP 25 entering Mon 6/11, leaving Thur 6/14
Alternate 2: EP 25 entering Tue 6/12, leaving Fri 6/15
Alternate 3: EP 25 entering Wed 6/13, leaving Sat 6/16
Alternate 4: EP 25 entering Thur 6/14, leaving Sun 6/17

Thanks!

If you look at the calendar that I posted in your previous lottery thread, you might see that Tuesday is your best bet. (But you will probably get your first choice in any case; I wouldn't sweat it...)

An overnight motor permit takes a paddle overnight for the Moose chain and a motor quota.

Even though that is true, I think a Tuesday should be pretty good, but you need to decide if you'd rather go that specific date and choose another entry like Fall or you are good with the day before or after or even 2 days one way or the other and stay with Moose Lake.

Get it in soon, the lottery runs sooner than the other paddle permits which are live on January 31st.

That previous thread was actually from me (goldenbadger), so thegildedgopher may not have seen the calendar. But I understand the confusion. Gilded gophers and golden badgers are very similar beasts. ;)

Correct, I had not seen that calendar. Thanks for pointing it out.

Schweady -- does that calendar pertain to overnight motor permits for 24/25, or paddle only?

Can you clarify this for me please? Are you saying that I need two separate permits? Or that my presence in the park counts against each quota? I'm foggt at best on all of this, thanks for your patience!

Oy... It seems that I have to apologize for two brain farts here.

1. In my world, gophers are golden, badgers are red. :-)

2. Yes, my chart is misleading in that it displays only those remaining OVERNIGHT PADDLE and/or OVERNIGHT MOTOR (combined) permits for 24 and 25. I created it 2 years ago, prior to learning (and, subsequently forgetting, apparently) that the lottery is a big deal to DAY MOTOR applicants for entries D, F, and G. (same locations as 24 and 25, but different permits altogether)

A brief look back at a thread posted by a more enlightened me a year ago. Even then, I didn't quite get it right: DAY motor permits being the hot commodity, not overnight as I stated there.

1. Sorry for any confusion.
2. If you are not motoring in for the day only (or focused on an overnight trip just prior to the walleye opener), the lottery is probably not of great benefit to you.
3. Thankfully, this all goes away next year.
