We were there in 2015 and had a blast. Alas, this year's chances of going are slim. We very much enjoyed the snow sculptures (probably just getting started during the first weekend), the trek out to the Hegman pictographs, and the snowshoe out to Listening Point. The weekend's high temp of around -10 was both good and bad: preparedness for the cold took on a whole new level, but (according to organizers) the "crowds" were down. :-)
We stayed at the Ely Grand Lodge, but have our sights set on staying at the Blue Heron B&B next time.

Love the snow sculptures in the park. I have been there some years it was actually Too warm and sculptures melted and crumbled shortly after.
It is worth seeing along with some day trips in the BWCA or groomed trails outside or Bearhead state park area.

We're planning on hiking out to the pictos on N Hegman. I'm guessing there will be a pretty good packed trail as long as there's not s fresh dumping of snow. I wouldn't mind snowshoeing out. But last time I tried snowshoeing, it was really hard on my hips (hip displaysia). But I was using my traditional style bear paws. Are there any places in Ely that rent snowshoes? Maybe the super light modern styles wouldn't be so hard on my hips.

Goldenbadger: "Thank you, Pinetree!
Lindentree, it's Feb 1-11."
Sounds good, I'll try to make it on Saturday Feb 10th.
The wife and I were looking for an excuse to get up there, we will probabally stay at the Knotted Pine in Isabella and drive up for the day.
If any of yu BWCA.comers are around that day lets touch base.
May the rivers be crooked and winding, and your portages lonesome, leading to the most amazing view.

I will be up there unless the Vikes make the big game.
I go every year. The snow sculptures are cool as are some of the demos in the park like winter tents and fat tire bikes. There is also the beard fest at the Boat House and the ice bar in Winton.
Its a good excuse to ski at Hidden Valley or snowshoe a trail somewhere.
I love the quiet of winter but the crowds for that weekend are kind of fun in a different way.

Please tell me more about this ice bar and where to find it!
