Hi. I am wondering if there is still a portage between Clearwater Lake and Rock Island Lake (or more accurately the pond just SW of Rock Island Lake)? This area is just E of Pagami Creek and south of Lake Two. Yes, I know much of this area (including the entire area of the portage in question) burned ... I like these areas. Older maps show a portage of about 242 rods. But some newer maps do not show this portage. I cannot see anything resembling a portage from air photos, except for what might be the landing on Clearwater. Perhaps it is just dusted from the fire, however other portages in burn areas are easy to see on air photos. Any input and assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

RoundRiver,
Yes the portage is still there but several years ago the BW quit showing portage trails in PMAs on their maps. Hence, the portages can be seen on older maps but even tho they are still there they are not shown on the newer maps. One other note, I think that portage is closer to 300 rods.

Thank you Canoerone. I did not know until after I sent my original post that it is a PMA. Looks interesting. A PMA site post says the portage on the northern end is very difficult to find - if not essentially nonexistent after the fire. Perhaps I will check this out on some adventure ... or perhaps a misadventure as Kevin Callan says!

I've looked for that portage without much success -- and that was before the Pagami fire. I can't say I *really, really* looked for it, and I might have missed it, but post-fire I'm guessing it's not passable. It certainly didn't look passable when I was there.

I think this has been discussed previously on the boards here...A quick search of the records might bring up more info.

I took that portage back in the day when it was a portage. I don't remember it being particularly hard.

Back in the day it wasn’t. We took an 85lb fiberglass canoe between Clearwater and Lake Two.
