I'm planning a trip for sometime in February and I'm stuck in a stand still with my self! I usually go to wood lake once or twice a year and fish for pike and do very well, but last 2 times we didn't have much for size but caught a very good amount of fish! I'm also spending a lot of time as of late chasing after lakers but haven't done it in the bwca yet. I guess my question is what's a good lake to catch lake trout (close to ely if possible) or what's a good spot on wood to try? Thanks in advance for any help!

As far as the lakers go, we just had a lengthy couple of post about that topic, I had the same question.

For large pike ask QueticoMike, Shock, or Mastertangler. They have a wealth of experience and are glad to share with other.

Here are the links about lakers, I hope it helps.

I've driven out on snowbank in the winter before. Compared to summer time there are a lot of people out looking for Lakers. It's easy access but the ice road ends and leaves vast stretches of the lake untouched. It might be different than years past but that's what I remember. As far as pike on wood I would guess they are not in the extreme north or south ends of the lake but I don't really know anything about ice fishing.... more of a guess.

Good luck

Ps I hear Burnside is easy access for Lakers too.

Ely isn't exactly the prime trout water. Burntside has them, as does Snowbank.

If you want a nice walk and to get away from any crowds, you can head into Oyster, too. They're in Basswood and Ima, too. Thomas and Fraser are quite the haul, but they've got trout, too. I doubt that's an exhaustive list of the lakes around Ely with trout, but it's a good start.

You might have easier access for them up the Gunflint.

If you are up for a little work, you can take the winter trail from Moose, up through Found, and Manonmin to Basswood. Lots of guys fish Lake Trout in that area and have some pretty decent success.
