normally in early spring when fishing lake trout from shore I'm on lakes that allow bait and I'm fishing with frozen ciscoes.
I am considering a lake for this spring that allows no bait. anybody ever use a dead bait presentation with gulp or some other artificial?

I've caught a few from shore making very, very, very long casts with heavy lures (usually spoons or Rippin' Raps), so it's possible. I don't know how well Gulp or a similar product would work, as I haven't tried it, but I *have* tried using them in less-than-aggressive situations (like under a bobber or just sitting on the bottom with the rod resting in a forked stick) with very poor results--and that was fishing bass and walleye.

curious what is this lake/state/area definition of bait ? would chicken skin be considered bait ?

here's a thought , get some larger minnow type plastic , score them up then vacum pack with dead suckers like a chum and then also bring in bait juice and spray/coat often ?

What shock said..they make some very realistic plastics nowadays and i would try some swim baits also. Another option is casting spoons. Something about 3/4 oz so you can really zing it out there...would work better if you have deep water next to camp. We use these fishing the breakwall in Two Harbors and often pull in lakers.

It all comes down to lake research..know what they a re feeding on and mimic it..a tried and true method..then do anything you can within the law..good luck..where is this lake that you can not use any bait?

Pretty common in Ontario to allow no bait live or dead in trout water.
I know we can catch fish trolling and jigging if the weather allows.

I've caught lake trout from shore on Little Cleos. Also, had very aggressive little ones hitting a small Twister Tail under a bobber one day. Never caught one, but they kept smacking it.
