Have always done traditional canoe trips into the BWCA, this year I will stay @ GNO in a cabin, to accomadate friends with knee issues. I have never fished Gunflint, Seagull or Sag from a motor powered boat. (or even from a canoe, have 20+ yrs. BWCAW expierence) We will be there May 21st-28th, hopefully catching walleye. Any & all info, tips, or DO's & DO-Nots, will be more than appreciated! My brother & friend have never been North so would really like to make sure they have a good & fishy time! Thanks in advance!

egan fishing the BWCA with my dad in 1957. I haven't been on the Gunflint since my grandson worked at Seagull Outfitters in 2014. The previous few years, we fished Sag and Seagull with guides. It seemed like the fishing on Sag has tapered off in recent years. We had the most success on Seagull for all species. Most of our fishing was done in the early Spring. You know that Seagull is divided into 3 areas, unrestricted, 10hp motors and much of the Lake is in the BWCA. It is good fishery, we fished it for quite a few years using just the advise of the Sea Island Lodge owner, but had great success in the latter years using a Gunflint guide. There are a lot more canoeists travelling through the Lake today than in the early years, but the fishing remains OK. We have had the best success backtrolling live bait with spinners and very small hooks, near the shoreline. Caught walleyes and bass right in the middle of the day, with bright sun. I didn't even realize that one could catch fish in such gorgeous weather that time of day. The Lakers were already in about 40 feet of water, off some large mounds, in early June. Good luck on your trip. These fish were caught on Seagull, take a look at the weather. Middle of the day, with just a slight breeze.

Can only speak on seagull. Fished it heavily in the 90,s. Targeted trophy walleye. It was good for that, but I wouldn't call it a great numbers lake for eaters, at least for us. We fished the big lake islands and reefs. Not a lot fish each day, but the ones we got were Big!! I'm sure the bays and arm would be better for numbers. Lske trout fishing was fair, but not my favorite lske trout lake.

you could hire a guide for a 1/2 or full day of fishing to get to know the lake and areas to try on the lake throughout your stay. talk to Mandy at GNO to see if either Lance or Adam are available.
are you bringing your own boat or renting a boat on Sag? Seagull? both lakes require day use motor permits and have motor size restrictions.
also, gunflint lake is 1/2 Canada, 1/2 US so if you plan to be all over the lake you'll all need the RABC permit and then Canadian fishing licenses.
sure hope you enjoy the cabin stay rather than your normal canoe trip! thanks for bringing new people to the northwoods.
