Have a group going to the East Gunflint area the middle of July. Will be putting in on Clearwater. What lake would be the best walleye, best lake trout, best northern, and best bass? Could be different lakes for each species. We'll probably base camp and day trip to different lakes.
Thanks

I will start with Smallmouth Bass on Clearwater.

Trust me, you will need to stay to the north side of the lake for Smallmouth Bass. Don’t even fish the south side of the lake because it’s too steep of a drop off. Find the points that have rocks on the bottom and that’s where you need to fish. As I remember there is 4-5 points that hold a lot of fish in a tight area.

Also on the way East big bay there is a sunken island that is not on any map. It is just as you enter the big Bay Area. You can see the area if you are watching with polarized sunglasses on. Anchor in the middle of the 100’ sunken island and cast out. You will grow tired of catching bass.

For bait you will want Leeches or worms for live bait. Also #2 Mepps spinners in grey squirrel tail and a silver blade.

On these two spots I have had 2-100 fish days, all released.

I’m not a lake trout fisherman, but my research says Mountain Lake is really good for them (a friend tells me Mountain also has lots of small smallmouth)
I had great success on Caribou for smallmouth. And friends tell me there is good walleye fishing there

East Pike is pretty darn good for bass. West Pike is good for lake trout; it has a really nice size distribution. Most I catch are 2-5 pounds (and more on the higher end of that range) with some up to 13. Mountain is supposed to be absolutely loaded with small lake trout.

Good info already. Mountain Lake is a great bass lake, but since you're limited to only fishing the south shore, a west/northwest wind can get pretty rough out there pretty quick.

I'd play the wind (I'm sure I don't need to tell you that). If it's breezy, stick to West and East Pike...If it's calm enough, head to Mountain.

Just my .02.
