I have over 20 trips with my family or my Scout troop. Want to go again but no one around to paddle with anymore. Thought about solo trip but was advised against die to kidney transplant 4 years ago. Still in good shape although a little slower.
I have self guided all my trips and have all the gear. Although aluminum canoes.
I am retired, so can go almost any time. Open to any area trip as long as the portages are manageable. The one place I have not been but would like to go to is the Adams Boulder Lake area east of Alice.
If interested or know of someone please respond. Thanks , Bill

I work with a guy who wants me to take him up there for the first time. He would make a good portage monkey. I am retiring May 1 so I too will have more availability. I will keep you posted. Are you going to Canoecopia? Great place to meet our crowd and possible canoeing partner.

Do you need a partner to monitor you? If not solo is certainly doable, so what if your a bit slow. That's me all over!
Dig around some this place is great for meeting and making new travel mates and friends.
Aurora Ill??? If so I'm in Burlington WI, a year older and wanting to head back to Adams, good memories from a decade ago!

No canoecopia, to far I might make Midwest Mountaineering canoe event. I am in Aurora MN an hours drive from Ely, MN. Though have been through Grand Marais a number of times. I am 65 and have slowed down a bit with age. Thanks for the reply, will keep you in mind.

I am planning to head onto Boulder this year and also live in NE Minnesota. Was planning to solo, but might be open to some company. I'm also working on my 6th decade and retired. Shoot me a PM and we can compare notes and see if something might work out. Could probably meet for coffee to discuss it sometime too, since you're in Aurora and I'm in the Ely area we're not too far from each other.

Even though I'm from Illinois I know Aurora and Biwabik MN very well. My sister has a place in Aurora, my mom grew up in Biwabik, and we have a 100 year old cabin on Esquagama. I usually get up there in May, July for the 4th and sometime in the fall. No fishing for me, I'm a traveler. This year is pretty booked between canoe and Bikepacking trips, but I'll keep and eye on your plans. I'm retired as well.

I also might be interested. And we might have something to talk about as I have donated a kidney. Agree trip finder forum might be better. Not as many posters there so it will stay near the top. Pete
Without the bad times, the good times wouldn't seem so good.

Could meet in Tower, some fine winter day. About how many miles do you do a day solo canoeing. I am open as far as time, but need some time to get in shape.

Hello bordertrail,
I might be interested in joining you in a trip up the Kawishiwi River to Adams/Bolder. I have been there a few times and like the area. My normal spring trip partners are not available this year and the Portage Clearing Trip is not happening so I am looking for partners for a late May/early June trip. Normally, I go with my sons who are Eagle scouts but they are getting older now with family duties of their own to take care of. I also lead Boy Scout groups but a spring trip is too early for them.
I am 68 and in pretty good shape but not perfect so an easier pace sounds OK to me. I also have all equipment needed to outfit a trip and a SRQ18 canoe. I some times take my yellow lab along but this is not a deal breaker if you are not a dog person.
Send me an email if you want to talk further.

I can only hope that when I die, my wife does not sell my fishing equipment for what I told her I paid for it

Well, if you're looking for fast, I'm not it ;) I really don't keep track of miles ... it depends so much on the weather (wind), number of portages, condition of said portages and how I'm feeling that day. I did not paddle much last year due to an illness in the family. The only overnight solo paddle trip I did was a two day trip from Lake One to Snowbank. Not sure what the mileage was. If it had taken an extra day (or even two), that would have been fine also.
Solo trips are a lot different than trips with others though, so hard to compare. I don't know how many miles a day you're looking for, but I'd much rather plan for fewer miles per day and if it ends up going faster great. Not any fun to have to worry about making a lot of miles.
My schedule is also pretty flexible. I do need to coordinate with my wife to make sure she is available to take care of the dogs, but that is generally not a problem given some advanced planning. I prefer spring and fall trips to summer, but have been known to take a summer trip.
Yep meeting in Tower sometime later this winter would be a great idea. Could compare notes on what time of year is best, etc.

bordertrail: "Grandma L: "I could be jealous - you guys get to have all the fun!"
I am not stopping you from having any fun. Are you going canoeing this summer."
Yup, I have a couple of trips in the planning stages - I just need sherpas to make them happen. I outfit, transport, paddle and do most of the cooking - carrying the canoe is not a possibility - I have back and knee issues. It is that "getting older" thing.
It might be fun to travel with this more "mature" group. As retired nurse - my skills might be valuable.

My last few trips were with my daughters. The oldest is an RN so she keeps tabs on all my ailments. She worked at the children's cancer unit at the UofM, then moved out to Denver to work at the children's hospital but not as floor nurse.
Have fun on your trips. Maybe we could use a nurse. I took a wilderness first responder course in 2000.
