It's approaching that time of year again...Bob is probably going to be backpacking somewhere in the Desolation Wilderness, so I'm taking the role of point man for this year's event. As always, it's at the Lithuanian Park on the beautiful Kishwaukee River.

Hope to see you as well. I've got a lot of new jokes. Lol.
I've missed the last 2 years because my grandson's middle school quiz bowl team kept making the national finals. Now he's in high school and no quiz bowl, so I should be able to make it.
I set a goal of losing 10 lbs. this year. I only have 15 left to lose.

I'm about 51%, just gotta figure out where I'm gonna be. Not gonna bring Maxx and Merle, that's too much stress.

I don’t really have a band yet, but I have a name for it, Bone Pain. And I have a plan... recruiting back up singers now.
Nothing can soothe the pain like a man with a guitar who you can sing Little Feat with by a campfire. My vision is nicking Ramones songs at the beat of a carpenter's pencil.

We have some new people interested and they need to know where the place is. If you put the address in Bing or Google maps it will get you close. The camping area is down a long gravel road. If you put the numbers in the mapping program it will go to the camping area.

I may come, and if I decide to bring a canoe, what do I need to paddle on Illinois water.....this Usage Stamp thingy?? Can I buy it at a gas station, or is this a on-line purchase? It would probably be a last minute decision, so fill me in on this process please.

Because it is considered a "usage stamp" and not a registration, Illinois wants out of state registered canoe users to purchase a stamp. The cost is $6 for the first 3 paddle craft and $3 for additional vessels.
The stamp can be purchased at any location that sells Illinois fishing licenses, such as bait shops, Walmart, sporting goods stores, etc. It is supposed to be affixed to the boat either inside or outside.
You will need the following information: Some sort of personal identification and Make, model, color and VIN # of your craft.

Those asking for directions, I'll add some landmarks. The Cherry Valley fire station 2 is on the corner where you turn south onto 42nd st. The fire station address is 4919 Blackhawk Rd, Rockford, IL 61109. Head south on 42nd street until you see the dead end sign. Turn left towards white house. Follow gravel road through gate heading East for about .5 miles and you'll be there.

Word of warning, if you plug in the Lithuanian Park address, it'll take you to the south end of Kishwaukee Forest Preserve. You'd have to bushwhack from there. It has been done but not recommended.
Best to GPS the fire station and go from there. I'll put a flying moose near the dead end so newbies will know they're on the right track.

It can depend on weather conditions, river levels, and if there are any other members interested in paddling on Sunday and/or willing to shuttle cars.

Whatever you do, when you pull off the blacktop into the park, don't turn right. I did that my first time up there and I thought I was gonna have to fist fight some old grumpy guy. It didn't help that he probably couldn't understand anything I said.

I am leaning towards coming out on Saturday evening with the family (I have Little League games that end Saturday afternoon.)
As a newbie, I have some questions. I see that there is no electricity.
Is there an outhouse or other bathroom facility?
Are there picnic tables?
Plenty of room for a six person tent?
Thanks

Sorry I haven't responded til now. But I was hoping to be able to make it this weekend but my knee is not cooperating.
I just went to the doctor on Monday and he said that the one that they put in me two years ago is bad and needs replaced. So I am very discouraged, lucky if I can get out and even get a line this year.
Everyone have fun and enjoy the great weather this weekend and take lots of pictures and share them when you can.
Thanks again and everyone be safe and have fun.

Would everyone who's attending this weekend please post and include the following info:
-how many in your group
-when you're rolling in
-do you need a boat or partner for Saturday's paddle on the Kish
for the newbs, how the paddle usually works is as soon as everybody's had their breakfast/coffee and time to lounge around a bit, we pack the boats up and head to the put-in around 10-11am. After the boats get back to the park (about a 2 hour float), food prep begins in earnest for the potluck and it's always quite a feast!
Should mention that donations to the Rockford Lithuanian Club for use of the park is greatly appreciated. There will be a plastic Folgers can labeled for donations.
Looks like we're gonna have great weather, looking forward to seeing everybody!

Partly sunny high of 76 Friday. Sunny and 80 Saturday. chance of rain Sunday and 66. Gonna be a good weekend weather-wise, and the Kish should be flowing nicely with the rain we had last night and will have tonight.

What time are we planning to start paddling Saturday?
And are we starting at Spencer Park in Belvidere? I'd like to start there. I started there last weekend and paddled to Bowman Park in Cherry Valley. River was in great shape with only one spot with trees in the way we had to line around near Distillery.

My life is all the richer for getting the chance to know you all and hang out from time to time. Priceless.
Thanks everybody for coming this weekend, hope to see you again next year and July 28 at Paddlefest!

George, my daughter mentioned that the songs around the camp fire was her favorite part of the camp out.
I decided to wet a line from the bank of the river before I hit the road. I managed to catch this river smallie:
