I've been on 2 trips but its been about 15 years, entered at Lake One and base camped on Insula and entered at Moose Lake and base camped on Knife. My daughter is 13 and has some interest in a trip this summer. So I'm looking for some info and ideas. I liked getting the tow boat through the Moose lake chain but think I'd prefer an entry point that doesn't require a tow boat so that we can leave after a day or two if things aren't going well. I liked the trip to Insula through the Lake One entry point but I seem to remember reading about a fire or big blow down since my trip there?? Thanks in advance for any tips on taking a teenage girl on her first canoe trip.

If your daughter doesn't have much paddling experience you might want to look at routes with smaller lakes.
Missing Link and exiting at Cross Bay is nice. One mile walk along the road at the end.
Little Indian R. Souix North is a nice EP with smaller lakes.
The pictographs on E. Hegman might be interesting.
Don't forget the wolf center in Ely.

Here's a nice introductory trip suggestion.

Much depends on your thirteen year old. Some at this age have the muscle and endurance of little adults, some not so much. I’d suggest the two of you get some paddling in before your trip. I’d keep it easy and fun, hog creek to perent is an easy yet nice trip.

I think the trip with the biggest single "aaaaah" moment for my girls was Johnson Falls.

This was their second year going and the one that convinced them going every summer is a good choice.

We went in through East Bearskin. To see the falls you can leave your canoe and just walk the trail - otherwise if you want to do a circle route, that portage with gear will make some regret the vacation.

If she likes to test herself, then by all means do the circle route. Or..., my oldest daughter and I really enjoy doing the Mudro loop - up Horse River, West on Crooked, and south on a bunch of little lakes back to Mudro. My youngest daugher did not like it as much however. There are some real challenges on that loop, but I think, it is the quintessential BWCA experience - and I recommend it so much, I have repeated it a total of 3 times now.

Definitely include her in the planning.......... my girls each did their first daddy/daughter trip with me when they were 5 and have made the final decision on EP/destination lake every time based on the info I gave them on a few options. It really makes it "their" trip. My 12 yo will be doing her 5th trip this year and my 10 yo has done 3 trips. Some people like to move everyday w/ teens but my girls still prefer to basecamp and spend time fishing/exploring so that's what we do. They even decide where we camp, when we eat, what we eat etc. They only time I override their decision is when safety is involved and that's only happened once. Daughter wanted to go fishing after supper and I could see that a storm was on it's way so we stayed in camp. 30 minutes later trees were blowing sideways and it was pouring rain. One of the few times she has said .... "daddy, you were right" :)

I like sticking to small water with a little one in the bow and these are some trips I've done with them that I really liked.

Baker EP 39 to Jack w/ my older daughter at age 9. Saw a ton of moose, small water, good walleye fishing on Jack.
Lizz EP 47 to Caribou w/ older daughter at age 7. I've also been to this area on other trips and love it. Horseshoe is one of my favorite lakes and a well known moose area. Small lakes and fairly easy portages.
Crocodile EP 66 (but enter from East Bearskin side) w/ older daughter at age 11. Good solitude especially for not being very far from the car and great walleye fishing.
Sawbill EP 38 to Smoke with younger daughter at age 7. Quick and easy to get to and decent fishing. Daughter liked having the Sawbill store right there when we exited for an ice cream treat before her shower.
Bower Trout EP43 to Swan w/ younger daughter at age 9. That trip was more work than others w/ either of the girls but it was well worth it. Swan is a beautiful lake and we had it to ourselves on Memorial Day weekend.

I did a solo in the Kawishiwi Triangle entering at South Kawishiwi River EP 32 that I think would be a great area w/ a teen. You can also access the area easily from Lake One EP and a couple others.

Enjoy the planning and have a great trip!!!!!!! The one on one bonding time with your daughter will be priceless. My annual daddy/daughter trip is my favorite few days of the year :)
