Has anyone else lost their seals on these? What have you done to restore the air tight seal?

They never seem to stay on very longt they get stretched and loose...seem to do fine without them...at least I don't worry about them not being there any more. If you want real peace of mind you can use a bag as a liner which I do anyway with foodstuffs

Maybe a shot of silicone spray would keep them lubricated so they don't stretch when opening and closing.

I also had little trouble with them. But like everything it has a life. You can prolong it some with some care. I've had the seal fail and we used like a marine glue to fix it. But that can be messy if your not careful.

If you are talking gamma lid on 5 gallon bucket I use to get them cheap at fleetfarm

I've tried the silicone but it only seems to last a trip before it peels off. I test them before every trip in my hot tub. I keep them loose when not in use to try and keep them from compressing. I guess I will start lining them with garbage bags. Not worried about water getting in but scent getting out.

they are still a neat idea... If you get lucky and find some 6 gallon buckets you can get even more 'stuff' in them

True but if you use the shorter food grade ones you can get two stacked in a military duffle bag...

New gamma lids are like $8 at Home Depot. Personally, I don’t use them for back country trips, however, I use them everyday twice a day on our pet food at home and occasionally (rarely) they fall off if I accidentally drop the lid on the concrete floor. Simply pick it up and put it back on. We’ve used the same lids and rubber seal rings for at least 3 years (365 days 2 times/day) without issue.

I don't think the seal prevents odors from emerging. We were raided by a bear on Knife Lake several years ago and I can still picture the bear running away down the beach with our food bucket. Looked like he was biting into a big marshmallow!

You'all must live "Charmed" lives having such good luck with these? I've had 2 for 2 fail within 2 years and so have my friends? Maybe our climate or the presence of more sand causes seal failure quicker? I would trust them indoors, but never outdoors. Been there, done that, never again. And I won't be rescuing any friend's Gamma sealed buckets from a dump in the water either; I almost turned turtle myself lifting that water laden piece of excrement. I wish I had been as lucky as the other folks here on BWCA.com with them.
