I’m going to be coming from Utah to Cloquet for work in mid July. I’m planning a week or so holiday after I finish up in Cloquet. I typically do my BWCA trips in late fall to avoid the crowds. Are there an other locations in the area that folks would recommend that might be a little more quieter for some fishing and canoeing that time of year?

Thanks!

Depends on what you're looking for, but 1) try Quetico instead of the BWCA or 2) try a river trip.

The Cloquet River might be too low by then, but you can have some fun on the Big or Little Fork, water levels allowing, of course.

There are places in the BW that are less traveled and offer solitude from crowds. For example, heading south on the Indian Sioux takes you to Bootleg Lake which only has two sites. This lake also has good lmb fishing as well. There are also a few lakes like Astrid that lie just outside the BW that usually don’t see much use.

There are some cool lakes and rivers around Cloquet; it's not known -generally-as a tourist destination. Check out Jay Cooke State Park though. The bdub is busier in July, but it isn't so bad that you wouldn't enjoy yourself.

I would buy a Superior National Forest map. There are hundreds of miles of back roads with many lakes and campsites. Like Timber Frear area. Or Thunderbird or Shoepack if you want to canoe in. Or there are many campsites you can drive to like Comfort, Section 29, Hog Back Lakes, ect.....

Nope, nothing to see in Cloquet... Nothing to bee see or done on the St Louis or in Jay Cooke.. ;-)

Are you coming to town to do some work at SAPPI by chance?

Drop me a line, I can give you some pointers as to some quick and easy things to get into...

I grew tired of bwca crowds long ago and found that backpacking was the way to find stress free trips up here. If you desire to canoe there are many routes that see few visitors. You’ll have to work a bit more. The beartrap river has always been a favorite of mine. The rivers just out of the bwcaw see few paddlers. The vermillion or little fork are very nice.
