My fiancé and I are looking for a really light weight summer BWCA tent! We bring our two dogs with us as well, so we are looking at a 3-4 person sized tent...honestly, anything is lighter than the one we have been portaging the past couple years! But I thought I would surprise him for his birthday!

Any recommendations are welcome!!

Thank you! :)

There is a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 for sale in the items for sale area.(It's not mine) This is an ideal tent for what you are talking about. Large tent with lots of head space and 2 huge vestibules. It only weighs 6# and I believe he is asking 300. They were 600-650 new. I think his is pretty new. I have a nearly identical tent.

The Big Agnes is very big and pretty light. But you can go lighter with the Tarptent Hogback (4 person, 49 square feet) or Cloudburst 3 (3 person, 35 or so square feet). See tarptent.com

You give up it being freestanding but save a significant amount of weight.

With dogs the copper spur floor would make me very hesitant as it's quite thin... I had one and ended up selling it, but the floor was really my only gripe. If you do go that route you'll have to supplement the floor with some kind of protection so add that to the weight.

Something with at least a 30d silnylon floor or 70d in conventional nylon would be much better. If you're looking for the lightest you're probably looking at the silnylon so something like tarptent (I have a Double Rainbow and a Cloudburst 3, both are excellent), hilleberg, stephenson's warmlite, or even something in cuben fiber like the hyperlite ultamid.

If it's just for canoe-camping you specifically called out a tent, but I would probably check out the CCS Lean as well. They might seem heavy until you look at the measurements and realize how big they are. ;)

You didn't mention a budget. :)

As an alternative - check out the REI Quarter Dome tents - redesigned and lighter - but not as expensive as the Big Agnes.

Off the top of my head, as previously mentioned the Big Agnes copper spur 4 is a 4 person tent. I use it for my family 2 boys and the wife and I, tight fit but for 2 with dogs would be spacious. Weighs in at 5 pounds.

I’d add a protective floor with the dogs but I do that anyway...think innie.

As previously mentioned there is a barely used one on sale here (not mine either) or new ones will be on sale in March 20-30% off at REI and Campsaver and other various stores. At least that has been the pattern for the last 3-4 years.

With the mention of your dogs my first thought is a Lean 1+ or 2+ , CCS Leans. Light weight and no/partial floor to wreck.
Bit more involved to setup but works very well!
My Lean 1+, 2 people and 2 dogs would fit (tight).

I have and love the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL4 tents, but with dogs in the equation I agree with Butthead that a CCS Lean would be a perfect choice.
