Ditto.
Pop into the ranger cabin on Cache Bay. Janice (I think that's her name) is very nice and fun to talk to. Ask her about her adventures on the Falls Chain! You will need a day pass. Bring cash, I believe she can take USD, but a credit card may also work. I can't remember what I paid her with when I bought t-shirts from her store.
Also, hope for no or low velocity winds that day! Paddling up Cache to the falls could be another adventure - one you would probably like to skip! :)

I'm slightly confused by the OP. Title says day trip to Canada, bust post says......from Saganaga(Canadian side). Is he paddling out of Minnesota (BW), or paddling off a Canadian shore to start this trip?
"What could happen?"

Big difference concerning the permits and documentation needed to visit another country.

sorry about that didn't mean to confuse anyone. We will be staying on the Canadian side of Sag so will be getting an RABC and a Canadian fishing license. But wasn't sure if we plan on just taking a day trip to Saganagon if we needed to get a pass. Heard on here about a possible portage between the two lakes. However if we need to get a day pass and stop at the ranger station then that would seem out of the question to go that route.

In that case, the info previously given is correct: you will need to buy a day pass because Saganogons is in Quetico while most of Saganaga is not.

Yes. You would need to stop at the Cache Bay Ranger Station to pick up a Day Vehicle Permit. It might be worth calling Park Headquarters and explain your situation and see if there is an alternative.
And yes... there are two portages from Saganaga to Saganagons. Each would be about an hour or so if single portaging for a day trip with light gear.

You can by a season or annual vehicle pass but that is probably pricey. Don't hesitate to call me park office and ask if there are any options. They might agree to let you get it in advance for a specific date.
That's one per canoe btw.
