Trade offs between the two are how you drop the weight. BA is freestanding but with very lightweight poles and thinner fabric. Tarptent is thicker fabric which is important as the tent is part of the structural strength and fewer poles because most aren’t freestanding. Like all compromises, there’s no clear answer. We got our tarptent before BA was getting freestanding tents to such low weights. We’re happy with the tarptent.

I've used the Copper Spur UL1 (not HV) for quite a few years. Solid tent, light and packs small. I found a deal on the Copper Spur UL2 a year ago- very close in weight to the UL1 and a little more room to spread out and sort of switched allegiance. I found the UL! to be quite comfortable for a solo tent. Great in rough weather.

I just purchased the BA Copper Spur HV UL 1, thinking I would have room for me and a medium size dog. The tent is great for me, as I am not a large guy, but I would not want to share it with a dog of any size as there simply is no room. I *almost* regret not getting the 2 man version, but my primary consideration was cutting weight.

I own the UL1 HV. I use it for backpacking and solo canoe tripping. The side entry is great! No need to crawl out a small door in the front. Free-standing is another plus. I'm 5' 8" and find it to be long enough to keep clothes, etc. inside. However, there's not a lot of width. I use a 20" X 72" rectangular BA pad.

I bought a Cooper Spur UL2 several years ago for my solo trips. SUNCATCHER recommended going to a UL2 and I glad I did. I am 6 ft tall and I use a Synmat UL7 LW sleeping pad (78”x26”x2.8”) and I think it would be a bit tight in the UL1 with my other equipment in the solo tent. It was only a few oz. heavier than a UL1.
I haven’t compared the specs of the newer HV version but I think the 2 person would be better for bigger solo canoeists for sure.
It would be a tight fit for 2 persons with sleeping pads in a UL2. I would go up to a UL3 if I were with 2 persons with pads.

You'll like the UL2 a lot. I've had mine for 3 yrs now and it works well as I'm a fairly good sized guy. It's nice to have a bit of extra room. As others have said it packs down nice and small and is really great weight wise.
