This is what I’ve narrowed it down to this year. What are you bringing?

Very interesting Basspro69. Way more stick baits than I would ever bring. And I don't see any lead-head jigs. Your tackle box must target bass, I guess.

Fun to see and compare.

Dude....I need a wide angle lense to picture our tackle this year. Last year we wanted to go far and fast single portaging so I didn’t bother buying any new lures, reels, rods, etc.... This year we are traveling much less and double portaging so I decided to buy a few new things and it all started out so logically and innocently. Let’s just say it’s beyond ridiculous for 2 guys on a back country canoe fishing trip. When I assemble, pack and weigh it the come to Jesus moment will necessitate the purging. Suffice to say I have tooooooooo much.

03/24/2018 02:27PM

Hmm...my box looks a lot like Bass Pro's! This year my theme is to use lures we have recovered over the years or have a certain nostalgia. The bomber long-A, the little rapala, and the chartruese crankbait were all found in various lakes or rivers. The hammered nickel spoon I fished with on my first fishing trip to Canada with my Dad. (1972). He has a slide of a northern beside the canoe with that spoon stuck in its mouth. The fatal flash lure I picked up in Astoria, Oregon. Perch swim bait was a gift from a Mexican herdsman.

I bring extra soft plastics along packed in separate pouches.

My box is heavily slanted towards trout with walleye and smallies second and third. There’s a few lead heads hidden in the piles but most of the time if I’m jigging a lead head it’s a road runner head with a power bait tail.

I need to completely put together tackle from scratch this year, and since I'm not a huge fisherman, I don't get the same enjoyment out of it (bait/tackle that is) as others; I'm kind of dreading it.

always been a huge fan of solid yellow tails , both the roadrunner and jig spinners are a must. and on the jig spinners as the year goes on i'll use a longer shank jig head and add a 5"+ tail, gives it a larger profile but almost the same weight.
my CD9 and spoons always want to come with. but this october it will be my brook trout box going with.
On a side note good to see you back on the site BP , hope life is slowing down a bit 4 U ;)

Thinking about dividing this up and stashing half in a pack. This goes under my seat and gets portaged with the canoe. The rubber bands work great for reducing tangles.

I was surprised to see so many needle nose pliers. It is 2018! Where are the hemostats? My favorite part about hemostats is clipping them on where you need them most. I walk around with a hemo clipped on a pocket or a belt loop and people stop to tell me something is falling out of my pocket. It is so easy I forget it is there, but I never have to dig in my tackle box to unhook a fish.

sorry Brad, the picture I posted was blurry.
It all fits into a waterproof Plano box. Spinners, jigs, hooks, weights, bobbers, Rapalas, top water lures, etc.

03/27/2018 12:31AM
Your tackle box looks pretty full, I hope you have lots of time to untangle those Rapalas, that will be a mess. Hopefully you will catch a fish on every single lure in your box. Basspro: that is a Lazy Ike in your box, I have'nt drug one of them for years, I always liked the green or yellow ones. Shock::: the picture of the Cleos and Dr Spoons...I was wondering where you got the bucktailed hooks? I finally gave up trying to find them and tied up a bunch of them this winter, they might not catch fish but they are sure pretty. FRED

in regards to tangled crank baits, I have tried everything and the best thing I have found is rubber banding the hooks together tightly. it only really works with double hook cranks but I'm pretty happy with it. You can usually pull one out of the box at a time and no need for separate compartments.

Whenever we get in big endmills at work I keep the tube that it comes in and usually pack two or three crankbaits in each tube.

not this exact style packaging but close.......

I just wrap the middle hook a couple times while stretching between the end hooks and that seems to do the trick on the 3 treble cranks.

03/27/2018 10:11AM

I can pack in as many as physically possible and I don't have any tangle issues. I just put the rubber band around my wrist while fishing and slide it back on when done.

Interesting to see what guys bring. I guess I never really understood how different I really am LOL ("oh we have been trying to tell you that for years" ;-)

I hardly fish anything truly small, and hardly anything brightly colored. Plus I would be horrified to pile all my lures together. Most all my crank baits have hook bonnets so the hook points don't create micro scratches on the finishes thus dulling them. I want to keep that little shine which mimics the slime which most bait fish have on themselves. Does it matter? Maybe, maybe not but at least they still look pretty 5 years later.

Yup...........Shock has kept some of his daddy's lures. Under the lazy Ike is a Rebel and below that it looks like some of the old time Shyster spinners which we used to do really well with on smallmouths in creeks and small rivers. Everything looks like it is well cared for.

Okay so my tackle is very similar.(Surprisingly I was using QMike's like a checklist as I have a lot of the same products) But what I do not see in the pics or in discussion is another staple I bring no matter what time of year I go. Drift rigs. Maybe ya'll tie your own, but I like to buy mine factory made. Carolina, Lindy, California doesn't matter. Am I the only one that brings those?

03/29/2018 01:03PM
I usually go to the Q so live bait is not an option. If I'm going with a more mobile presentation a just troll cranks.

I have not got into the Q yet so not an issue for me but that makes sense. It also brings to light the whole carry in live bait issue. The extra weight and need to carry it also could hinder one from taking it. I always carry at least crawlers (and leeches in a bag) as I like to set a night bobber while relaxing by the fire with a beverage.

I try not to bring crawlers because they are an invasive species in the BWCA. They change forest ecology and are not good for native plants and wildflowers. That being said, there has probably been enough worm dirt spilled to introduce crawlers to every campsite with dirt.

If I bring leaches (non-lake trout trips) I put a half-pound in a Nalgene bottle with two lids. One lid is drilled full of small holes, the other is solid. The leaches can survive sealed up long enough to get to camp (and won't spill). Once at camp I switch to the drilled lid and tie them out by the fish stringer. If you aren't fishing much remember to refresh their water periodically. They will push up against the small holes and restrict the water flow.

I tell the guys that come with me that one tackle tray and a small baggie of some soft plastics is more than enough. I still don't end up fishing 68% of the stuff. But, until I get more and more confident in certain techniques and lures over a few more BW trips, I guess I'm going with a grouping close to this (soft plastics not shown, i.e. Zulus, tubes, spider grubs, senkos, power worms)

and it all fits in nicely in a handled Plano tray. I am missing a couple Little Cleo spoons that went with me to Florida last week. Usually 2 moderately sized Cleo's along too.

04/05/2018 11:15AM
Depending on when you are going in, I'd suggest a few of these: deep diving taildancers in firetiger, perch and copper/olive. They can be worth it especially those that dive to 20' and 30' for when walleye and LTs are down deep.

Has anyone have any luck running a 3 oz sinker tied in 36" or so above a crank bait for trolling deeper for Laker's or Walleye? I have never tried it but I have never fished for LT in the BWCA either. Only have caught Lake Trout on downriggers trolling or jigging through the ice. Headed to Gijikiki, Cherry and Amoeber area this mid-June and we are going for the grand slam.....I am embarrassed to show the amount of tackle I am bringing....lol started small and it just kept growing as I debated each species and what weather or bite we might run into.

04/06/2018 09:15AM
I've run that system with up to 2 oz inline sinker weights about 3' upstream for the 9cm taildancers. Trolling for lakers in this manner can be very effective. Dr. Spoons in the 285 and 295 (20 - 30ft) sizes are popular as well.

I just tie in a snap swivel between my main line and leader. You could use snap weights also.

FOG51: "Your tackle box looks pretty full, I hope you have lots of time to untangle those Rapalas, that will be a mess. FRED"
I always have at least one lazy Ike and one Erie dearie in the box as great a trolling lure as has ever been made!"

Basspro, I've had a few of those Erie Dearies spinners for a long time, but I don't think I've ever rigged one up in MN. What do you tip yours with in the BWCA?"

I’m in the same boat. To hell with my tackle box being “too heavy!” I’m young and can portage anything I bring... which is always a lot of tackle.

We usually pull perch color shad raps. Are you targeting walleye with the purple and gold colors? Might have to give those a try.

Gold is a great color for walleye. Got this one on a gold Rapala Husky Jerk

All greared up for spring 2021 trip. Way more than I need, but less than I've taken in the past.

The sad thing...I am putting 3 boxes for 3 canoes full of novices. I have enough for each box to get 2 of everything!

You know you will lose a few lures to northerns, novices will lose a few to the tallest trees in the area, might lose a few to underwater logs...

Might as well take plenty to cover everything....its not like you can go there every weekend.
