Ms. Mycelia and I have been changing a lot of late. Sold the house and we're building a 600 ft cabin to call home. I left my job and now work for a wood shop, the state of Illinois eliminated Allison's job so she's working retail. For years we've tossed around the idea of spending the summer in the BWCA. We're buying a camper and plan to stay at the campground in Grand Marais.

So we're thinking about some sort of part-time summer employment. I have a background in the trades and the organic industry. Allison has two masters in Forestry. Think anyone would like to hire two 50 year olds whom are over-educated?

I would think your odds would be pretty good. GM is a place that has a dire shortage of workforce housing, so if you can solve that problem, you'll be able to find work. After all, they import workers from overseas on temporary visas. I have an acquaintance who was trying to make a go of being a contractor in Duluth and wound up moving to Grand Marais to find work. Now, finding quality employment might be a bigger problem, but it doesn't sound like you need that.

forest service

you could also contact the campground to see if any people are renting their campers for the summer. some of the aging population keep their campers there year round and hardly use them.

try the Whole Foods Co-op, they are big into organic. also, i thought there was an organic farm north of town, kind of a community thing.

could also try the resorts up the trail that hire seasonal workers. Boundary Country Trekking/Poplar Creek Guesthouse usually advertises for someone to help with trail maintenance and odd jobs. Trail Center is usually always looking for help. bearskin might need a naturalist.... lots of opportunities.

With the camper and us staying at the Marina campground housing is covered. Was mostly curious to the openness of hiring 50 yr old folks instead of kids. We're aware of the quality issue just thought a part time job would open us up to meeting folks.

i would say you both could get hired. the youth of GM doesn't really want to work and it's pretty impossible to get international workers.

Too bad you are not heading to Ely. I know of several summer jobs there. Outfitters and Retail. If you were in the Marcell-Grand Rapids area, I have lots of work for a carpenter!

Those kid visas thing has dried up. Summer laborers are tough to come by.
