We have been using the Exped Megamat 10 LXW's for a few years now and really enjoy the comfort of the mats. We are trying to lighten up our load a bit and wonder if there are any alternatives that would be almost as comfortable and possibly deflate a little quicker and be a little lighter out there. What is everybody using to keep off the rocks and roots. No bear taco advise please.

When I have to go to ground.... I love my Exped downmat 9 LW car or canoe camping. For backpacking I have a no longer made exped synmat 7 mummy that works well.
A schnozzle is a must.

To lighten the load, I replaced my Exped Synmat 7 with a Thermarest NeoAir XTherm. I have been happy with it so far.

Megamat 10 is a wonder-mat when just the right inflation. Too bad it's so heavy. Best car camping air mat. Helinox One cots (wider is better) really help with pressure points on shoulders when paired with any air mat. I can attest to that.
I have several mats and some I don't like cuz the feel is too plastic-like. I used a Thermarest NeoAir XTherm last year on my tenting trip to Alaska. Very comfortable and no squeaky sounds when I tossed and turn during sleep.

Thanks for the replies. That Thermarest and Schnozzle are something I am going to look into. Happy paddling!

Expend 9lw also. A little bigger than the 7 but a good compromise compared to your heavy megamat.

+1 on the 9LW paired with a schnozzle, it's my 4 season solution for camping. Careful with the schnozz, tho - it's possible to overinflate the pad & pop some baffles.

I will check them out. Thanks!

This is a no brainer. For the ultimate in comfort, light weight, small packed size, and quick inflation and deflation, get the Exped Synmat Mega 12. The comfort is about 90% of the Megamat---you won't miss that 10% because you'll be sound asleep. Deflation and rerolling beat the Megamat by a mile. Deflates and rolls in seconds. You'll be glad to get rid of the monster Megamat. Some will disagree but I don't think there's a better mattress on the market than the Synmat Mega 12.

If you want something smaller than the Mega 12, there's the Exped Synmat 3D 7. I use it on a Helinox cot for great comfort. But if I'm not taking the cot I take the Synmat Mega 12. The difference in size and weight between the Mega 12 and the 3D7 isn't that great, whereas the Mega 12 does provide quite a bit more comfort.

One mattress, all purposes: Synmat Mega 12. I recommend the wide version 25.6".

I have been updating my gear and I went with a Big Agnes Long/Wide Q-Core SLX. I am a big guy and I slept very well on this mat without my hips hitting the ground. I agree with what others have said regarding an inflation bag, it is very helpful and can be used for other things. I have also found the Q-Core to be quiet to sleep on as well. I should also not hat I upgraded from a 20+ year old self-inflating Thermarest that had to be a whopping 3/4 of an inch thick.
