I imagine people have been violating the rules as long as there have been rules.
Now the po-po get to use helicopters; I like reading the stories from the old days of Art Madsen snowshoeing in after them. :)

i wonder if they are landing the helicopter on the ice and writing the ticket on the spot?
and only a fine or do they also confiscate gear and fish?

We have had them fly in and check us several times on fly in or boat in trips. We have never had a ticket or even a warning. Sometimes they seem more interested in if you have any alcohol in the boat, absolute zero tolerance. Couple of times they have checked our stringers then taxied back to the cabin with us to check the fridge and see if we had a live well with fish.

You can’t drink beer in a boat in Canada? Does this apply to the driver only or all passengers? Either way, God bless America.

You can have unopened alcohol in your boat going straight to your camp or back to the launch. No one is allowed to consume any alcohol on the boat driver or passenger. As previously said absolute zero tolerance. If you have an empty beer can on the floor of the boat, (according to the owner of lodge we boat and fly out of), that is considered to be open alcohol and you will be cited. He told us somebody claimed it was to bail with , they were cited.

I’ve heard some folks opine that the lack of enforcement has led to much greater use because people are going in without permits.

I am glad to see increased enforcement. A few years ago we saw 8 fishermen fishing below Rebecca falls (clearly in Quetico) with live bait while they drank their bottles of beer. They were camped on Iron Lake.

Does this apply to canoes as well as to motor powered boats? Does it mean that transporting alcohol around the Quetico in Nalgene or other similar bottles is illegal? I imagine that would make criminals of many posters on this board.

Interesting question and excellent point - many, many folks repackage alcohol so as not to carry glass...are they running afoul of this aspect of the law in Canada?

As of September 2017, you could be charged with OUIL when operating a canoe the same as in a vehicle. At that time it was in the works to change the OUIL but I’m not sure if it has been changed. Trying to research in reference to transporting In a repackaged container I believe that would be illegal as it says it has to be a sealed, unopened container. I personally would NOT trust my knowledge on this subject and would contact the RCMP or OPP before I took the chance. I do know the owner of the lodge we go out of told us not to have our flasks with alcohol in the boat, but that is a motor boat.

Each person may take 1 liter of alcohol legally as of last Autumn when we went through Sand Point. It may be in a Nalgene and can be any type of alcohol. You must declare it and that is one area where you can expect to be searched.
8 guys fishing with live bait and open beer bottles in the Quetico is painful. What a clear breech of the letter and the spirit of Canadian law.
